1978年発表。この年、イーノはアンビエント・シリーズの第1作『Music For Airport』も発表していて、アンビエント・シリーズは第4作のイーノ作品『On Land』(1982年)まで続くことを考えると、このシリーズ物とは別に枝葉の世界をシリーズ名なしでスタートしたことを本作は意味していると思う。
『Music For Airport』では『無視出来る』を一歩踏み出して、音を環境のためにデザインし配置するという発想に到達している。あたかも映画の為に映画音楽や映画のための効果音があるように、その環境にふさわして音楽を作り配置するという発想である。その最初の環境として選ばれたのが『空港』だったということだろう。そして本作はその『貼り付け』の場所に『Films』に選んでいる。それは昔10ccが『オリジナル・サウンド・トラック』でやったような架空の映画のための音楽のイーノ版とも取れる。

この発想は今では携帯電話の着信音にまで波及している。どのような空間であっても心地よく空間に溶け込む音が必要な時代を今まさに迎えている。着信音を選択する行為と同じように聴く音楽。それがイーノの考えるアンビエント(囲まれる)だ。そして本作はその拡散の最初の作品とも言える。イーノはこの後も『For Films』の続編を制作することとなる。

ミュージック・フォー・エアポートでひとつの金字塔をうちたてたイーノの、これはそれに先行して発表された、アンビエントの傑作ですね。これはＵＫ盤の紹介ですが、ＵＳ盤の紹介のほうには、試聴がついているので、ぜひ、２曲目「フロム・ザ・セイム・ヒル」を聴いてみてください。う、美しすぎる！深い森の中の湖に（シンセ）、木々の葉からの朝露がポトリと水面に（アコースティック・ギター）落ちる情景が浮かんで来ません？
架空の映画のサントラというコンセプトのため１曲が短いのが残念です。ここからいくつかとりあげてエアポートなみの長さにしてくれんかなあ。とにかくこれ聴いてトリップしてください。旅行に持っていくのもよし。それぞれの曲にぴったりの情景の場所みつけたらそこで聴くといいのでは？

おそらくは日本で最初にこのアルバムが発売されたときのライナー・ノーツの誤訳のせいではないかと思うのだが、このアルバムに付けられた「架空の映画のサウンドトラック」という説明は「SOUND TRACKS FOR THE FICTIONAL MOVIE」を訳したときの間違いで、「フィクション映画のためのサントラ」が正しい訳になるのではないか。「フィクション・ムービー」とは日本でテレビ公開もされ、その後ビデオ発売もされた「第三の選択」というジョーク番組のことだからだ。09の「ALTANATIVE3」がまさしくこのテレビ番組の原題である。

「ビフォア・アンド・アフター・ザ・サイエンス」とさほど間を置かずに発売されたこのアルパムを初めて聞いたのが、そのもう30年も前ということになるのだが、「アンビエント」というコンセプトを確立する直前のブライアン・イーノの試行錯誤の足跡という位置付けになるのか。最近限定盤でこの続編が発売されたりしているがやはりこのアルバムもまたオリジナルトラックで聞きたい。

自分は「スパロウズ・フォール」という短い曲の連作が、「アンビエント」のひな型だと位置付けている。
