この巻では、主人公、吾郎のおとさん(おとうさん)本田茂治が、アメリカから来日したメジャーリーガー、ジョー・ギブソンの死球によって、亡くなってしまいます。
元々はピッチャーとして活躍していた彼が、肘の故障を理由に一時は引退まで考えていたが、バッターに転向する事で、現役続行を見事に叶え、やがてバッターとしての実力も認められ、ついには一軍に復帰し、バッター転向後、初めてのスタメンの試合に起きた不幸でした。
息子、吾郎の為に野球を続ける夢を実現し、吾郎の保育園の先生、星野桃子との結婚も決まっていた彼にとって、後は三人で幸せになるだけだったのに…
病院で吾郎がギブソンに「おとさんをかえせ」と、泣きながら何度も繰り返していたシーンは、あまりにもかわいそうで、見ていて涙が止まりませんでした(>_<)
