フジロックの出演も決定したライアン。「今年中にアルバムを３作品出す！」と宣言してファンを喜ばせていますが、最初の作品がいきなり２枚組１８曲というボリュームで出ました。（国内盤はさらにボーナス３曲入り）
その気まぐれで奇天烈な言動やアルバムごとに作風が変わることから、個人的にはニール・ヤングの後継者といった位置づけで見ていたのですが、今回は新たに組んだバンド、カージナルスを従えたカントリー色の強い作品に仕上がっています。ただし、曲によってはアコギ主体のシンプルなものもあり、あくまでも主役はライアンのソングライティングであることは言うまでもありません。
それにしても、どの曲も素晴らしい！！以前から多作で有名な人でしたが、前作「Love Is Hell」あたりからソングライティングにますます磨きが掛かり、深みもいっそう増しています。
昨年のライブ中にステージから転倒し、腕に大怪我をした時はファンを大いに心配させましたが、休んでいる間に彼の創作意欲にさらに火がついたかのような爆発ぶりです。
いずれにしても、いよいよ天才の本領発揮といった感じの本作、「アメリカンロック名盤１００選」に新たに加えるべき傑作の誕生です！
残りの２作品も今から楽しみでしょうがないです。

どうも"New York, New York"の印象が強いのか、John MayerやJason Mrazらと同じ文脈で語られる事も多い
（あとよく名前に「ブ」を付けられる　笑）Ryan Adamsですが、
彼の本質は多種多様なジャンルをいとも簡単に飲み込んでしまうその感性の高さであると思っています。

前作「Rock N Roll」はリフ主体のシンプルな（でもどこかひとクセある）８ビートを鳴らし、
The StrokesやThe White Stripesといった新世代のガレージ・ロックを意識した作品だったと思います。
更にその後リリースされた「Love Is Hell」では一転、フォーク・カントリー的な弾き語りスタイルをメインとした作風で度肝を抜かれました。

このような彼の性格のひねくれ具合は有名で、とあるラジオ曲のDJはその態度の悪さに「リアムギャラガーよりひどい！」と後で言ったそうです（笑）

そして今作、印象としてはNeil Youngの様な男臭いブルース・ロックが中心となっています。
もっと大袈裟に言えばThe Bandの様な（唄い方はちょっとBright Eyesっぽくなってるかな？）。
本当に、何をやらせてもサマになる人です。

というか、言っちゃいます。

これ、最高傑作かも!?

とにかく声・演奏のハマり具合がハンパじゃありません。才能溢れ出すぎ。
Disc１-2・5とか、Disc２-5・7とか、もう涙腺緩みまくりの名曲オンパレード。
文章がとてもオーバーに聞こえそうで申し訳ないのですが、
それ程強く惹きつけられるような作品だという事をご理解いただければ幸いです。

あと輸入盤ですが、歌詞はしっかり記載されています。

ライアン覚醒の年となった２００５年の一発目に発表された当アルバムですが、バンドサウンド（メンバーがいい）、ソングライティング、作品としての完成度、本当にすばらしく文句のつけどころがありません。
"what does it to mean to be so sad"　　という一節、
ゾクっとしますね。
今後の才能の大爆発に期待！です。
