27年前、六本木に（古典的）ディスコがいくつもあった。姉が近くで暮らしていたので、スクエアビルによく行った。
「時代を現すDVD」というものがあるが、この1枚が正にそれ。題名も社会現象そのものだった。有名なレコードジャケットを今見ると、踊っている自分が見えるようで恥ずかしい。
いつ見てもそのころがよみがえるDVDで、ストーリーからディスコダンスに移る場面では、今でも当時のステップを思いだしてワクワクする。

ジョン・トラボルタの存在感が際立っている、まさに彼のための映画といっても過言ではない。
ただし、この映画はそれだけではない。脚本がしっかりしている。
青年の夢と挫折、友情、恋愛、家族。それらが、複雑な折り合いをなしていきラストまで見ごたえあるドラマに仕上がっている。
全編にちりばめられるように挿入されている魅力的な音楽と踊りも
見ごたえ十分である。

若い頃にこの映画を見た時には、今はやりのトレンドものくらいしか考えていなかったが、最近改めて見てびっくりした。昔、どんなふうにこのストーリーを理解していたのか全く記憶がない。日本映画のどの監督でも今、この作品にまさるものを作れるか疑問だと思う。アメリカ版の佐藤オリエの出た「若者たち」というところか。日本の今の若い監督の作る映画に見事に欠落した概念である「格差社会」という問題をビージーズの曲にのせて展開するストーリーは感心を超えて尊敬に値する内容である。昔の日本映画の「若者たち」なら零細企業の工場で働く工員が、この映画ではペンキの販売店員、一方、勝ち組は今の日本の社会なら転職もなく生活安定な大企業の高学歴・サラリーマンであり、この映画ではマンハッタンで暮らすデイビッド・ボーイと友達ずきあいができても、密かにこうした連中を馬鹿にしているトラボルタの新しいディスコダンスのお相手である。主人公の兄が親に将来を期待される牧師であるにもかかわらず、この職を辞めることを決意する。伝統的なアメリカのキリスト教的宗教観が格差社会によって崩壊していく。まさに社会批判の精神が隠されている。今のヒップホップもラップミュージックもこうした過去のアメリカの勝ち組と負け組みの歴史を反映している。しかし、日本の若い映画監督だけでなく旧世代のものは、ただただアメリカの表面的な服装、ファッション、音楽だけをコピーするだけの魂のない文化だったように思えてむなしい。
