「ヘヴィでダーク」な内容と聞いてたから、正直買うかどうか迷った作品だったが(個人的key主体プログレッシヴ思考だから)、これがなんともいい。ジェイムス・ラブリエの世界観とはこれほどまで空間に暖かみを帯び且つ、包みこむようなゆったりと心地好い情景を思い浮かべるような陶酔感を覚えさせてしまうのかと、つい見入ってしまうほどだ。だがなによりも一番驚かされたのは本職であるはずのDREAM THEATERをあっさり飛び越えたそのサウンドプロダクションの高さなのだ。あまりの音質に思わず驚嘆してしまったほどなのだが(どんなに優れたセンスのバンドでもプロダクションが甘いとどうしても聴いててストレスを感じてしまう)だからこそなのかそれに拍車を掛ける楽曲群にただただ恐れ入るばかりである。歌メロ指向の曲中心なのでゆっくりリラックスして聴けるのもまたいいところ。正直こんなにバランスのとれた作品は中々ないだろう。まだの人は是非。

5.0 out of 5 stars ドリーム・シアター型ソロ・プロジェクト, 2005/4/30
孤高のプログレッシブ・メタル・バンド、ドリーム・シアターのボーカリスト、ジェイムス・ラブリエが、何を思ったか、ソロ名義で活動しだした。自身のプロジェクト、マルマズラーでは、歌に焦点を合わせた楽曲が中心だったが、今回はまさにドリーム・シアター型のプログレッシブ・メタルを展開している。
レコーディング・メンバーはマット・ギロリー(key)、マイク・マンジーニ(ds)、ブライアン・ベラー(b)のマルマズラーの面々と、新顔ギタリスト、マルコ・スフォリ。どうしてもドリーム・シアターと比べてしまう楽曲の中で、この注目ギタリストは、ジョン・ペトルーシに迫る滑らかなピッキングで効果的なフレージングを残している。ただし、ドリーム・シアターほど壮絶なインスト・パートでのバトルはないけどね。
全体的にはヘビーで、『アウェイク』辺りの音像に近い気がするが、静かに聴かせる曲も合間合間に挟まれていて楽曲のバラエティは豊か。『トレイン・オブ・ソート』と比べるなら、明らかにこちらの方が、アルバムの流れは起伏に富んでいる。そのうえ曲によっては、サンプリングのリズム・トラック、スクラッチ、編集されたボーカルやギター・パートなどもあり、ヘニング・ポーリーとのプロジェクト、フレイムシフトを思い出させるところもある。（今度のフレイムシフトは、セバスチャン・バックが歌うんだってよ。こちらも期待大!!）
アルバムの出来としては、ドリーム・シアターに比肩するし、近年のドリーム・シアターのアルバムよりプロダクションも良い。（ジョン＆マイキーのプロデュースは音の粒が粗く聞こえる…のは僕だけ？）ただ、今になってジェイムス・ラブリエがこのようなソロ・アルバムを制作したことに、少しばかり不安を抱いてしまう。自身の音楽的アイデアの発露ならば、マルマズラーの路線でも良かったのでは…。
ドリーム・シアターの新譜も６月発売予定だが、まさか…辞めないよね。

　ソロ作品としては過去最高の内容だと思う。ヴォーカルに関してもドリーム・シアターの「TRAIN OF THOUGHT」よりもメロディ、表現力ともに上回っている。5や9での囁くような優しい歌声がいいね。
　楽曲はヴォーカル中心でコンパクトにまとめてあるが、プログレ、テクニカル・ハード・ロックという趣で、随所にアンビエント風の展開が聴かれてメリハリも利いている。メンバーもマイク・マンジーニ(ds)以外は私の知らない人ばかりだが、凄腕揃いだ。特にギタリストはイタリア人でフュージョン畑のプレイヤーだそうだけど、見事なプレイを聴かせている。
