ク-ベリック・バイエルン放響のブルックナ-４番は録音・演奏ともに実に素晴らしい。録音の優秀さはマイクを通して収録していることを忘れてしまうほどで前後の奥行き、左右のバランス、各楽器の音量といい過不足がまったく無く正に特等席もの。演奏もこの上なく、極めて自然な音がそれこそ大河のように流れる。当盤を含むこのコンビによる1978-1980年頃のＣＢＳソニ-への録音-シュ-マン、モ-ツアルトの交響曲-は優秀作品揃いだが中でもブル4は神がかり的といえる。このＣＤが初めて売り出されたものを約20年間愛聴しているが他の演奏と比べてもやはり群を抜いている。

　1979年11月の録音。遅めのテンポでじっくりと熟成させるような演奏である。クーベリックとバイエルン放送交響楽団（Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks）のコンビで聴くブルックナー演奏には、その背後に独特の思いや高いプライドがあるように思う。

　クーベリックは、ブルックナーの「泰斗」ヨッフムの跡目をついで、このオケの特質にさらに磨きをかけてきたと言えるだろう。彼は、1961〜1979年の永き期間にわたってこのオーケストラを指揮したが、スラヴ系作曲家、ハルトマンなど20世紀の作曲家に加えて、ブルックナーやマーラーも得意の演目だった。

　音楽の自然の流れを重視しそこに熱い思いを注ぎ込むクーベリックの演奏スタイルは、時にフルトヴェングラーやテンシュテットの演奏を連想させる。その一方、オーケストラの自発的な動きを尊重し最大限その良さを引き出し、さらにそこに彼独自の哀感や熱情といった表現力を見事に内在させていくことで、聴き終わるとやはりそこには「クーベリック流」としか言いようのない良き個性を感じる。４番は名演が多いがクーベリック盤はこの価格帯では３番とともに推奨に値する。３番の「駿足さ」と４番の遅めの熟成のコントラストも実に興味深い。
