改訂癖で有名なブルックナーの交響曲なら、二種類の名演を全集で揃える事をお勧めする。一方はインバル＝フランクフルトrso.盤、もう一方はヴァント＝ケルンrso.盤。インバルはノヴァーク版第一稿で一貫しているし、ヴァントもヴァントで、稿に於いては最終稿、版に於いてはハース版で一貫していて、共に作曲者への敬意に満ちた暖かい眼差しが感ぜられるからだ。
そうすると丁度穴が開くのが、原典版だけで三稿もある第三交響曲の第二稿なのだが、心配は無い。

この【≪クーベリック＝バイエルンrso.盤≫】こそが、見事その穴埋めを果たして呉る。

実はこのクーベリックが使っているエーザー版こそ、あの伝説的な｢第三交響曲の悪夢｣の時にブルックナーが使っていたのと同じ楽譜なのだ。だが、クーベリックのこの名演を聴いて頂ければ解る通り、生前のブルックナーの指揮がどれ程下手だったか、と云う事に話は尽きる様だ。この第三交響曲は、その時の失敗が元で再び改訂され、より頻繁に現在演奏されている第三稿があるのだが、私は決して第二稿が第三稿に劣るとは思わない。出来としては同等である。こんな改訂をする位ならば、ブルックナーは第九交響曲の完成を急ぐべきだったと、断固私は思う次第である。

　３番の秀演である。テンポは全般にかなり早い。そのうえでアゴーギクは相当大胆に用いられる。ブラームスはブルックナーの音楽は買っていなかったがドヴォルザークの「メロディ創造力」は高く評価していたと言われるが、クーベリックの演奏を聴いているとブルックナーのメロディがドヴォルザークと二重写しで錯覚して聞こえるような気すらする。クーベリックの織りなすメロディは生気に満ち実に溌剌としている。個々のメロディに愛着をもって音楽を再現している姿が眼に浮かぶような演奏である。弦や管の各パートも、アド・リビトウム（自由度のあるテンポ）で情感たっぷりにメロディを奏でているように聞こえるが、それでいて全体のバランスや統一感はきりりとしている。こんなにも胸に迫るメロディが満載された曲だったのかと思う一方、弛緩された部分が一切ないのが不思議だ。これぞ音楽に熱い「血のかよった」クーベリック・スタイルなのかも知れない。
