『ライジング』以来3年ぶりの新作をリリース。今作では基本的にスティーヴ・ジョーダン(drums)とブレンダン・オブライエン(bass)とのトリオ編成でレコーディングを行い、よりアコースティックな作風がうかがえる。プロデュースは前作同様ブレンダン・オブライエンが担当。

   かつてのブルース・スプリングスティーンはインスピレーションの源を西に求め、その結果、荒涼とした『Nebraska』とシリアル・キラーと中古車の物語となった。3年ぶりのアルバムで、スプリングスティーンは不毛の砂漠と古き良き西部の戦場を案内し、12の孤独な歌を仲間のアーティスト、そして彼のアコースティック・ギターで披露している。いつものフックを繰り出すパンチ、そしてそれぞれの旅が脳裡に刻みつけられるメロディーで、今回のスプリングスティーンは歌詞を重視して、悲劇、失恋、欲望をラテン系の解釈で紡ぎ出す。「The Hitter」での帰郷したボクサー、「Matamoros Banks」での絶望的な国境越え、そして「Reno」で、警告のステッカー“成人向け画像”に通じるネバダの気の良い売春婦。ミックスにEストリート・バンドが参加していないアルバムはホーンセクションとストリングスで彩られ、珍しくスプリングスティーンがファルセットを2曲の名曲で披露している。40夜の旅を終えて恋人の元へ戻った語り手を歌った「Maria's Bed」、心ではカロライナ以上のことを思っているアップテンポの「All I'm Thinkin' About」だ。これは10年後には、スプリンスグティーン作品の中で過小評価されているアルバムになりそうだ。（Scott Holter, Amazon.com）

5.0 out of 5 stars 輸入盤を購入されるに当たっての注意事項, 2005/5/3
この商品は、Dual Discです。つまり、１枚のディスクが両面仕様になっていて、片面がCD、もう片面がDVDです。ここで、注意が必要なのは、アメリカ輸入盤であるため、DVDのリージョンコードが「１」となっており、日本のDVDプレイヤーでは見ることができないということです。CDの方は、問題なく聴けます。邦盤に比べて安いので、CDのみを楽しもうというかたはこの商品を購入されることをお薦めします。
なお、CDの内容は素晴らしかったです。

裏にこんな記述がありました。
The audio side of this disc does not conform to CD specification and therefore not all DVD and CD players will play the audio side of this disc.
つまり、CD基準に準拠していないから、CDサイドはプレイできないプレイヤーがありますと。実際、iTunesはこのディスク認識してくれませんでした。もうDual Discは買わないぞ。

内容は、近年の作品の中ではかなり良いほうだと思います。ソングライティングに切れが戻ってきた気がします。Eストリートバンド無しのボス、でもOKな人は聴いたほうが良いです。

Springsteenは時折落ち着いたフォーキーで、内証的な作品を発表してきたけど本作もその位置づけ。
80年代の熱血ロックンローラーとは対極にある渋さを全面に出した弾き語り中心のシンプルな作品。
アメリカはもとより全世界的に軒並みチャートイン。
しかし先進国中日本だけがいまいち売れていないみたい。
個人的は血管うきまくりのアメリカンロックをしているSpringsteenの方が確かに好きだけど、これほどのロックスターが例え売れ線違いの作品ではあったとしても、全くといっても良いほど注目されない日本の音楽業界を取り巻く環境にもびっくり！
