皆さんに大好評だった第33回『友の死(山南敬助の切腹)』に本当に何ともいえない哀しさを感じました。実は、大河ドラマ放送当時は、あまり『新選組!』を見ていなくて、最近の堺雅人さんの活躍から、ファンの間で好評の『新選組!』の第33回とは、いったいどんなストーリー展開で、どんな演技なんだろうと期待していたのですが、やはり、総集編などでは、出せない山南敬助脱走までの葛藤などが、堺雅人さんの表情にも、良く出ていて、みんなが何とかして山南敬助を逃がせたいという思いも、それぞれに出ていて、それでも、山南敬助が、笑顔で、堂々と切腹という脱走行為に対する罰を受ける、、、。最後まで、沖田や近藤の事を心配して、さりげなくかける一言や、自分が死んでも他の人に新選組の行く末を見届けて欲しいという思いを託す姿。谷原章介が扮する伊東甲子太郎との知的なトークに一瞬、負けを悟る姿。愛人明里に対する優しい姿。明里から、だんごの食べ方を教わる姿。沖田の姿を見つけて、もう、これ以上逃げられないと悟った時の表情。明里の前では、いつか国へ迎えに行くと明里を何とかして悲しませないようにしようとする姿。いらだって、ちょっと、明里の前で、いつもは、物静かな山南(堺さん)が、突然大声を出す姿。介錯に沖田を指名したいと言う姿。土方歳三との思い出のシーン。近藤に『自分は、この新選組に入隊した事に少しも後悔が無い』という台詞。すべて、総集編などでは、一言では、語れないシーンばかり、、、、。とても、見応えがありました。『新選組!』をまだフルで見る自信の無い方は、この有名な第五巻に収録の第33話から見始めたら、どんどんその前後が見たくなってハマるような気がします。江口洋介が扮する坂本龍馬も、魅力的だし、、、、。本当に感動しました。新選組全体より、堺さんが、見たい人は、間違いなく総集編よりも、この第33回『友の死』からが、良いですね!第五巻には、第33回の前後(山南敬助の葛藤から、山南死後の新選組への影響)が、収録されているので、全体のストーリーも、掴めます!

池田屋・禁門の変・そして山南の死。
新撰組!の魅力のすべてが凝縮されています。
あれほどのセットをつくり、あれほどの迫力があった池田屋事変。
斬り合いが始まったのは最後の10分か15分。
まだかまだかとどきどきして待ってしまいました。
しかし時間以上に長さを感じます。
DVDだから吉田、宮部と近藤さんが対峙するシーンも、
宮部が斬られたシーン（もちろん近藤さんじゃないですよ）
も確かめることができます。（TVのときは速くて見れなかった。）
そして禁門の変では久坂玄瑞 と鷹司卿が・・
反響を呼び再放送までされた山南の切腹も見られる。
1っ本にこんなにつまっていていいんでしょうか。

大河「新撰組！」をまた味わえる一品．近藤勇役の香取慎吾も後半特にサマになって見せてくれましたが，それ以上に嬉しい誤算だったのは土方歳三役の山本耕史．時代劇でこんなに味のある演技をするとは思ってませんでした．土方歳三の本物の写真像と似ていると思ってしまったのは私だけでしょうか？それ以外にも個性的な隊士の役柄をそれぞれ演じた出演陣にありがとう！
