　近衛師団長惨殺シーン、三船敏郎演じる阿南陸相の自決シーンは目をそむけたくなるほどの迫力がある。この作品が白黒で良かったと思う。

　決起工作に奔走する青年将校たちの軍服の、脇から背中を黒く染める汗の描写。額に光る玉の汗。参謀飾緒をはねあげながら、長い坂道を自転車で駆け上がる彼らの異様なエネルギー。おそらく実戦経験がなく、目の前に広がる本土空襲の災禍も国民の窮状も理解しようとしない彼らが、なお、国家のためと終戦阻止の決起に情熱をかける。ここには「敵を知らず、己を知らず」自分の都合のままに主観的感情的な戦争指導に暴走した昭和の陸軍軍人の典型が浮かび上がる。目をむいて、激情のままに行動する畑中少佐を黒沢年男が力演。「貴様の純粋な心には感銘する」と不本意ながら決起工作に協力する井田中佐の言葉は、畑中少佐ら決起派将校の心情を解く「鍵」となっている。彼らの決起工作は「こうなるであろう」「こうあらねばならない」という主観に立って構成され、国を思う我々の工作が成功しないはずがない、という自己陶酔に支えられている。名作である。

終戦前夜から当日の軍内部の姿を描いた超大作。
東宝の8.15シリーズ最初の作品であり、大宅壮一の同名小説を岡本喜八監督が見事に描いている。
主演は当時の東宝オールキャスト総出演で三船敏郎と黒沢年男２人の
真剣な演技に当時の軍内部の葛藤が見事に再現されている。
あえてモノクロ作品で撮ったことにより、出演者の表情が鋭く描かれています。
岡本喜八の才能に脱帽します。
長い長い１日であったろう時の流れが、我々見る側も手に汗を握って同時進行します。
最後に流れる天皇陛下の玉音放送の中、悲しい結末を迎え長い１日が終わります。

　東宝俳優のすさまじいド迫力、圧倒的な存在感にただただ脱帽。何なんでしょうね、この緊張感は。この当時の日本映画は本当にすごいですね。とにかく感想にならないくらいに圧倒されました。ドキュメンタリータッチで玉音放送までの1日を描いているのですが、戦闘シーンなどがほとんどある訳でもないのに引き込まれていきます。監督の手腕・名優の演技・脚本等全てがすばらしい（黒澤年男の演技がちょっとおおげさ？）。現在の日本の映画界ではリメイクしても、ここまでの作品には仕上がらないでしょう。テーマもはっきりしていますしね、必見です。
