One Of A Kind is album number two for the Bruford band, it shows Bruford's wild jazz roots for once and all, peppered judiciously with numerous elements of his freewheeling prog rock past. To accompany his nimble rhythmic travails, he assembled a crackerjack squad of supporting players. Together this quartet recorded the symphonic prog of 'The Sahara of Snow,' the electronic shabazz of 'Hell's Bells,' and the undeniably gorgeous fusion-bop of 'The Abingdon Chasp.' Rarely has an album title been so accurate. Remastered reissue includes the bonus track 'Manacles' plus a bonus interview/music disc. Winterfold. 2005.

１９７９年録音のBill Brufordの傑作「One of a Kind」がリマスターされて、しかもボーナストラックまでついて発売されるということで入手しました。 77年発表の「Feels Good To Me」のリマスター盤と同時発売です。

「Feels Good To Me」のところでもレポートしましたが、これも２枚CDがあって驚きますが（ボーナストラックってそんなにあるのかよ！という驚きです）、実は版元のプロモーション用です。しかも、「Feels Good To Me」のおまけと同内容。なんだかな~。

また、一番肝心のボーナストラックは、これまた同様にA・ホールズワースではありません。79年録音のライブで、ギターは知る人ぞ知るという、「Unknown John Clark」。彼のプレイもそれなりに楽しめるのですが、なんせ大本命のホールズワースではないので、けっこう落胆感があります。残念！

情報によると、ジョン・クラークが残した唯一の音源にして、Bruford名義の唯一のライブ盤でもある「The Bruford Tapes」もリマスター加工されて発売されるとか。これは私個人の裏読みになるのかもしれませんが、それに向けて、先行２枚にボーナストラックとしてくっつけた感もしますね。したがって、ホンネでは星２つの評価ですが、相変わらずオリジナル音源は素晴らしいので、タイトル脇の評価は星４つです。

　まずはこの作品は後半の楽曲の完成度の高さが注目される。
実は、BrufordとHoldsworth在籍中のUKがライヴで演奏していた曲の中に、後のDanger Moneyに収録されたThe　Only thing She Needs,Caesar's Palace Blues,Carrying No Crossがあり、そして、本アルバムに収録されたForever Until Sunday（Eddie 作曲）, The Sahara Of Snow（Part２はEddieも作曲でクレジットあり）がある。結局、３人編成のUKのセカンドアルバムの基調にふさわしいものと、Jazz RockテイストのBRUFORDのアルバムにふさわしいものとに分けられてしまったようであるが、実は両方ともに、Eddie Jobsonが大きく関わっているという事実がある。この点が今まで見落とされてきたことである。
　Eddieは後に本アルバムのForever Until Sunday でのviolin演奏は自分であるとやっと認めたものの、おそらくDaveの名誉を慮ってか、キーボード演奏に関しては「覚えていない」と、２，３年前に自身のForumで発言している。しかし、これは、ブート盤などで確認されるように、このスタジオ録音が４人UK時代にライブで演奏されたサウンドの特徴と合致し、Daveの参加しているBRUFORDのライブ演奏でのサウンドと全く異なるものであることを確認すると、誰の目（耳）にも明らかとなるはずである。それは、Daveがサウンドの主導権を握ってしまったGradually Going TornadoのサウンドがOne Of A Kindのサウンドと大きく異なることとも一致する。
　One Of A Kind がきわめて優れた完成度を持っている所以は、実はEddieの貢献によるものであったといえるのではあるまいか。
　０９年UKZの来日公演でも演奏されるであろうThe Sahara Of Snow には注目である。
　いずれにせよ本アルバムはJazz Rock,Progressive Jazz(Rock)の名作であり、見方を変えればUKのもう一つのセカンドアルバムであるといえるだろう。

リマスター、ボーナス付きなので結局購入しました。ＬＰ２枚、ＣＤ３枚目になってしまいました。７０年代の英ジャズロック・プログレッシブロックを聴いていた人には非常に評価の高いアルバムと思います。
メンバーは、カリスマ的ギタリストのアラン・ホールスワース、ベースは絶頂期のジャコ・パストリアスに比肩するジェフ・バーリン、カンタベリー系のハットフィールドやナショナルヘルスで独自のサウンドを確立したキーボードのデイブ・スチュアート、そして、イエスやキング・クリムゾンでの個性的なプレイで評価の高いドラムスのビル・ブルッフォードです。
アランのギターは流麗なフレーズに豊かな表現力があり、ビルのドラムスは私の知る限りでは、ＹＥＳの危機に並ぶベスト・プレイと思います。個人的には、Fainting in Coils、Forever Until Sunday、Sahara of Snowが好きですが、その他の曲も完成度が高く、プログレッシブロック的なスケール感の中に、メンバーの力量が発揮された最高のジャズロック・インタープレイが楽しめます。
