巨匠指揮者バーンスタインが、作曲家としてユダヤ教に関係する名曲(「交響曲第3番」や「チチェスター詩篇」など)を書いたことは、もちろん既に有名です。しかしこの分野、実はバーンスタインは、中には公開の場で演奏されたことすらない、多様な音楽を残してくれていたのです。当盤は世界初録音多数で、既に録音がある曲でも当盤のバージョンでは初の音源となるものもあります。お薦めは声楽曲で、合唱曲も独唱曲も、不思議な魅力に満ちています。ピアノ独奏曲「4人のイスラエル人」も音の数が少なくて一見スカスカなのに、なぜか訴える力がある。やはりバーンスタインの音楽の生命力は出色と言えるでしょう。
