シカゴが「最もAORしてた時代」、つまりピーター・セテラが殆どのリードヴォーカルをとり、デヴィッド・フォスターが楽曲提供をしていた時代のヒット曲を中心にセレクトした企画アルバム。
結果として、「これぞアメリカ大衆音楽の神髄」とでも呼ぶべき、恐るべき高水準の内容を誇るベスト盤に仕上がった。

最高の楽曲を、最高のバンドと歌手が演奏し、それを最高の録音で収録する、それでいて内容は気軽な愛の歌であるのが如何にも80年代的だが、今となってはそれが都会の喧噪に疲れた耳に心地よく、文字通り「癒し」を与えてくれる。

かと言って別に柔弱でなよなよしい音楽という訳でもなく、リズムセクションは堅実かつパワフルだし、お馴染みのブラス・セクションは時には咆哮もするし、コーラスはソウルフルで分厚い。

人生を謳歌し、諸手を揚げて愛を称揚するこういった音楽は、今の音楽シーンの主流ではないかも知れないが、やはり人間の持つ普遍的な価値観にマッチする。
特にかつてのロス五輪前後の「強く美しいアメリカ」を想起させ、洋楽で育った世代にはノスタルジックに聞こえるだろう。

カウンターカルチャーやサブカルチャーも重要だが、アメリカ社会の本流をいくのは、本作のような力強くカラフルで、衒いもなく愛を掲げる、そんな普遍的なポップソングであると思う。

４２歳の厄年の私としては、「素直になれなくて」を耳にすると、ぐっときてしまいます。今年の夏は暑いですが、車でシカゴを聞きながら通勤すると、気持ちが涼しくなります。また、学生時代の思い出がよみがえり、老け込んではいられないと、発憤したりします。若い人にも聞いてもらいたいなあ。素敵ですよ。

北米盤、欧州盤の「美味しい所」をチョイスした”有り難い作品”です。既に北米盤を持ってますけど・・・購入しますよ、長年のコレクターですから。
