言わずと知れた、映画「Closer」はタイトルロール前から“And so it is...”となんともいえない息の多いdamianの声で始まる。アイルランド英語独特の空気を多く含んだ発音が耳と心に心地良い。映画の中の要所要所で流れる「Cold Water」のクラシックの印象派のようなピアノがまさか彼の曲だと思っていなかったから、ＣＤを買って、同じサウンドを聞いた時は驚いたと同時にため息が出るほど嬉しかった。気分が良い時でも心の中で何かがわだかまっている時でも、とりあえずdamianの「o」をかける。自分の時間を大切に過ごしたい時に聞く音楽。そんな音楽はそうあるものじゃない。ＵＫでの評価はあまり高くない。その他大勢のシンガーソングライター中の１人だ。と言う人がいるけれど、自分の耳には、だれにも替わることができない、これからも、そしていつも、聞いていたい音楽だ。

映画クローサーの主題歌 ザ・ブロウワーズ・ドーターはもちろん、エイミーやデリケートそして映画アイアムデイヴィッドで流れるコールド・ウォーターとどれも素晴らしい曲ばかり。
ダミアン・ライスの曲はなにか難しいメッセージのようなものはなく、ただ自分の経験したことや感じたことや信じる心を素直に歌っているという印象がある。
中でもコールド・ウォーターは短いながらもその中には彼の宗教観が痛いほど感じられる。最初のほうは神にすがりつくような悲しい声で、そして最後のほうは神にすべてを捧げるような力強い声で・・・。
映画アイアムデイヴィッドで流れるシーンも見事に映像と絡み合っていてかなりおすすめです。

いいもの見付けちゃった。

これは誰にも教えたくないなあ。
ひとりで聞き、堪能し、そして本当に好きな人にだけ、こそっと教える。
そんなアルバムです。

アコースティックの序盤から始まり、ストリングスなどがからむ後半戦まで、
意味を持つ一つ一つの音色とその余韻が、時には優しく、時には激しくからみあいます。
そこにぶっきらぼうで、それでいて繊細なボーカルが全体をなぞるように包みます。

多分、後半の売れ線志向は、プロデューサーの意向でしょう。
やっぱり、デビューアルバムだし、そこそこ売れないといけないし。
そんなところだと思います。
でも、それを除いても、デビューアルバムとは思えない、いい出来だと思います。

エリオット・スミスとかダンカン・シークとか好きな人（私ですね）にお奨めです。
と思ったら、「ブロワーズ・ドーター」が、映画クローサーの主題歌になっているそうです。
エリオット・スミスが辿った道となんだか似てますね。
如何にも欧米のカレッジ出が好みそうな音楽ということですか。
