モダンジャズ史上屈指の名ライブ盤（1955年9月9日録音）。内容の素晴らしさは勿論、半世紀前の収録とは到底思えぬ臨場感溢れる音質も、本盤を名作足らしめる要因と言い切ろう。全く全世界のジャズマニアは、録音エンジニアを務めたルディ・ヴァン・ゲルダー翁に足を向けて寝られない。傘寿を過ぎて今もなおブルーノート、プレスティッジ等の名盤リマスタリングに精を出すこの偉人に、改めて最敬礼せねばなるまい。

先ず幕開けの、アトランティック時代のクリス・コナーの名唱も懐かしいロジャース＝ハート作におけるクインテット全員の躍動感が凄い。特に無酸素運動さながらに吹きまくりながらも若きジャッキー・マクリーンとドナルド・バードの奏でる音色は、何処までもリリカルで魅力的だ。ポール・チェンバースはいつものようにノコギリアルコを全開。好みが分かれるところであるが、当時弱冠二十歳の卓越した技量にただただ恐れ入る。音楽監督ウォーリントンのセンスを垣間見れる一曲と言えよう。

ビバップ・マナーの2はスイング感覚が素晴らしい。フロント陣とリーダーは控え目なのでチェンバースの弾く重低音とアート・テイラーの安定感を堪能したい。テーマ部分のタイム感覚が洒脱なマクリーン作の名曲3では、再び各人がきらびやかなソロを展開。スピードを上げた4ではテイラーが活火山さながらに爆発、一気に主役に躍り出る。さらに愁嘆的な「朝日のようにさわやかに」を元ネタとした5、「Love Me Or Leave Me」を改作した収録先「カフェ・ボヘミア」テーマ曲として名高い6、おまけの終演曲「The Peck」まで聴き手は怒涛の勢いに脱帽するほかない。何百回聴いても飽きることのない、問答無用の傑作である。

最後に抜群に印象的なジャケットについて一言。演奏終了後の朝６時に家路を急ぐクインテットが撮影用に駆り出された行き先は、果たしてジョージ・ワシントン大統領就任100年を記念して建造された大理石アーチの聳える、グリニッチ・ヴィレッジ近くのワシントン広場であった。米国初代大統領さながらの「ジョージ・ウォーリントン」の類まれなる統率力への賞賛を暗示する、何とジャズ的な隠喩であろう！

カフェ・ボヘミアというライブ・ハウスでのライブで、チェコ遠征の記録ではない。素晴らしいジャケ写はワシントン広場でのスナップ。
内容はドナルド・バードとマクリーンのフロントで『バードランドの夜』を演ったらこうなる、というもの。これがあの地味なアート・テイラーかと驚くような前ノリのシンバルに乗せて、ツッコミ気味のソロが展開される。私は苦手だが（タメの効いていないマクリーンなんて）、『バードランドの夜』の好きな人には同じようにエキサイティングなんだろうとは思う。チェンバースのノコギリアルコが聴けるので１点減点。
