　グラム・パーソンズが提供した２曲は、恐らく最も素晴らしいオリジナル・カントリー・ロック・ソング。ウディ・ガスリーやルーヴィン・ブラザースといったカバーも演奏・ボーカルともに文句なし。それにしても前作からは想像もつかない大変化だが、よく考えてみればバーズのメンバーは、元々はみんなフォークやブルーグラスなどロック以外の音楽を演奏していたんですよね。文句のつけようがない完璧なアルバム。

後にEagles等に影響を与えたカントリー・ロックのパイオニアの6作目。それまでのフォーク・ロック色からグラム・パーソンズ加入によりバリバリカントリー色が強くなっています。とは言っても編成は通常のバンド編成（スティールやバンジョーがカントリー的）ですし、楽曲のレベルが高く保たれていて、すばらしい仕上がりです。コーラスワークも◎。まったり感あり、でもコテコテすぎないアメリカ音楽の良心。カントリー聞かず嫌いの方にも是非。

６８年発表、バーズの傑作アルバム『ロデオの恋人』。
グラム・パーソンズが新加入し、彼の主導のもと作られた本作はカントリー・ロックというジャンルを極めたと言っていいほど、非常に完成度の高い作品に仕上がっています。耳当たりのいいアコースティック・ギターと絶妙なハーモニー、個々の楽曲も一つ一つのクオリティが高くまさに名盤。

スティール・ギターが印象的なボブ・ディランのカバー曲「ゴーイング・ノーホエア」にはじまり、バンジョーとフィドルがカントリー・ムードを高める「私は巡礼」「プリティ・ボーイ・フロイド」、こちらもスティール・ギターが美しい「ヒッコリー・ウィンド」、本作の中でも特にコーラスが心地よいグラム・パーソンズ作の「１００年後の世界」。最後もやはりボブ・ディランのカバー曲「なにも送ってこない」で、この名盤のラストを飾ります。

全体的に落ち着いた雰囲気の作品なので、とてもリラックスして聴けます。それに、曲自体はかなりキャッチーなものが多いので、このジャンルに馴染みのない方も含め誰でもすぐに気に入るはずです。

また、この年はザ・バンドの『ミュージック・フロム・ビック・ピンク』やローリング・ストーンズの『ベガーズ・バンケット』等、カントリー・ロックの名盤が数多く発表されています。ブルースと並ぶ、ロックのルーツとしてのカントリー・ミュージックが再び見つめ直された年でもあります。本作はその中でも特にカントリーを意識して作られた、まさに時代を彩る名盤です。そして、この流れは後のクロスビー・スティルス＆ナッシュ、イーグルスへと引き継がれていくことになります。逆にイーグルス等は聴いたことがあるけれど、バーズはまだ聴いたことがないという方にも是非この『ロデオの恋人』を聴いていただきたいと思います。
