ナット・アダレイの兄はアルト・サックスの巨人、キャノンボール・アダレイ。3歳違いの兄が人気者だったため、一緒に演奏するとどうしても脇役にならざるをえなかったが、ナットの存在抜きにキャノンボール・バンドの成功はなかった。59年に兄弟で結成したバンドは、ファンキー・ジャズ・ブームに乗って大成功をおさめた。
その最大のヒット曲は、本作のタイトル曲でもある<1>。この曲を作曲したのがナットである。ほかにも『ジャイヴ・サンバ』『オールド・カントリー』『ネヴァー・セイ・イエス』などいい曲をたくさん書いており、コンポーザーとしてすばらしい才能の持ち主だった。
ナットの愛用楽器はコルネット。クラーク・テリーやアート・ファーマーがフリューゲルホーンを一般化したのと同様、ナットはモダン・ジャズ・シーンにおけるコルネットの第一人者でもあった。これはナットの代表傑作で、なんといってもゴスペル調のタイトル曲が聴きものだ。曲によって編成を変えており、ウエス・モンゴメリーの参加も嬉しい。（市川正二）
