1957年5月31日、ニュージャージー州、ハッケンサックで録音。Prestige7105。
1987年にカーク・フェルトンの手でデジタル・リマスターされている。メンバーは1-3がレッド・ガーランド、4-6がマル・ウオルドロンのピアノ。ポール・チェンバースのベースにアルバート・ヒースのドラム、それにトランペットとバリトン・サックスが加わるといったかなり珍しい構成である。
ジャケット写真のコルトレーンは若々しく、テナー・サックスが良く似合う。（●＾o＾●）
曲は未だ自らのスタイルを確立するには至っておらず、逆に言えばいかに急激にジョン・コルトレーンは成長したが知れることでもある。まだソプラノ・サックスには到達していない。そういうコルトレーンのスタート地点を知ることが出来るアルバムとも言える。この3年後、1960年10月21日から26日までの6日間にコルトレーンは3枚のアルバム分以上の驚異的なレコーディングを行い、これが編集して出来上がったアルバムが、『マイ・フェイバリット・シングス』・『コルトレーン・プレイズ・ブルース』・『コルトレーンズ・サウンド』となるわけだが・・・・夢のようである（●＾o＾●）。

養老先生が言っていた。その人の未来はその人自身の中にあるのだ、と。ジョン・コルトレーンの成長はまさにそれを実地でいっている。しかも物凄い速さで。
