　バーンスタイン晩年のチャイコフスキーの交響曲は超個性派の名演奏として知られているものです。思い入れたっぷりに歌いまくって、普通とはまったく違ったバーンスタイン独自の世界観をつくりあげています。そのため、好き嫌いははっきりと分かれると思います。オーソドックスとは程遠い演奏スタイルなので、入門用としては積極的にはお薦めできません。
　併録のロストロポーヴィチによる「くるみ割り人形」はバーンスタインの濃い演奏と比べるといくらかあっさりした感じもありますが、ベルリン・フィルの美麗な音色をいかしつつロシア的な民族色も感じられる秀逸な演奏です。
　パノラマ・シリーズはどちらかといえば入門者を主眼に置いて制作されているように思っていましたが、このCDに収録されている演奏を楽しむことができるのは入門者よりもむしろ他にも何種類か同曲のCDを聴いてきた熟練者かもしれません。

　ちなみに、バーンスタインのチャイコフスキーでは、交響曲第4番のレコーディングもあります（ドイツ・グラモフォン POCG-30007）。もしここに収録された第5番、第6番「悲愴」が気に入ったなら、そちらもお薦めです。

バーンスタインのチャイコフスキーは濃厚な後期ロマン主義の結晶のような深い感情移入から生まれた名演。ロストロのくるみ割り人形もベルリンフィルの一人一人の演奏家が楽しんで演奏している。特にカラフルな木管の響きがクリアに録音されているのがいい。初めて聴く人にはもちろん、通俗名曲として嫌う人ももう一度曲の魅力を見直させる力を持ったすばらしい名演だと思うのでぜひ聞いてみてみてほしい。

このCDの最大の魅力は、バーンスタイン指揮、ニューヨークフィルハーモニックによる交響曲第六番「悲愴」である。
バーンスタインの整った指揮は、この曲独特なメランコリーを感じさせるロマンを美しく表現できている。
また、併録されている「くるみ割り人形」はベルリンフィルの音の重厚さを引き立たせるロストロポーヴィチの指揮が魅力的である。
