　ＣＤ会社としては「初心者向けの廉価２枚組」という感覚で発売したと思われるが、どうしてどうして、このディスク、けっこういろんな演奏をききこんだ方にとってももとめるだけの価値を充分に持っている。
　絶頂期のカラヤンによる「ツァラトゥストラ」「英雄の生涯」がきけることだけでも有り難いのだが、そこに同じベルリン・フィルを振っても音楽的に時代感覚のまったく違うカール・ベームの「ティル」と「ドン・ファン」が収められている。カラヤン登場までのR.シュトラウスの「古き良き正統」はケンペやベームにあったわけで、そうしたことを議論するうえでも見逃せない。
　そして決定的なのが「ホルン協奏曲第２番」だ。この曲は大戦後に８０歳をこえた老シュトラウスの手になるもので、当時のシュトラウスは「モーツァルトに還る」という発言をしていた。そのため「まあホルン協奏曲第１番と同じでいいだろう」（こちらはシュトラウスが１７歳のときの作品だったと記憶する）という解釈になってしまいがちなのだが、カラヤンはそうは考えなかったようだし、わたしもカラヤンの解釈に賛成だ。曲はたしかに明朗で、のびやかにホルンが響くのだけれど、そこには「かなしさ」がある。ハウプトマンのホルンが「まるではるかな山あいからきこえてくるように」鳴り、ベルリン・フィルが曰く言い難いツケをしているのをきくと「うーん、さすがカラヤンだ」と思う。
　カラヤンはR.シュトラウスのホルン協奏曲第１番は録音していないと思う。なにを録音しないかもひとつの発言である。けれどここでのききては「もし録音してくれていれば」と、どうしても思う。そういう気持ちを（わたしと同様に）おもちになった方には1971年にペータ・ダムがホルンを吹き、レーグナーがドレスデン国立管弦楽団を振ったディスクをお薦めしておく。「Strauss,Damm」で検索すれば見つかります。

カラヤンとベームという巨匠の指揮によるものでどれも素晴らしい。これが、この価格というのはお得だと思う。R.シュトラウスは現代で聞きづらいという印象を持つ人がいるかもしれないが、これはそんなことは感じられない。減点材料としては「アルプス交響曲」と「4つの最後の歌」の歌詞カードがついていないこと。
