ロマン派の作曲家の中でメンデルスゾーンがやや過小評価されているのは不思議なことです。ゲーテも激賞した「モーツァルト以来の神童」ぶりに同時代人が嫉妬したせいかな?　旋律や和声は明らかにロマン派の本流を行くのに、形式的には見事な古典的均衡を保っているせいかな？　しかしこの「メンデルスゾーンの名曲ばかりをＣＤ２枚に詰め込んだ超廉価盤」を聞けば、彼がいかに多面的で素晴らしい作曲家であったかよく分かることでしょう。

泰西名画を音楽化したような見事な「フィンガルの洞窟」をカラヤンの豪華なタッチで。

中学の音楽鑑賞以来食傷気味になるほど聞かされてきた「メンコン＝メンデルスゾーンのヴァイオリン協奏曲　ホ短調」も、カラヤンの秘蔵っ子アンネ・ゾフィー・ムターのこってりとした美音で綿々と聞かされると新鮮な発見が。バックは勿論「完璧な伴奏者」カラヤン指揮のベルリン・フィルです。

名曲を何度も録音し直す印象が強いカラヤンですが、「交響曲イタリア」に関しては唯一の録音とか。いかにもカラヤンらしいゴージャスにして細心、颯爽としています（メンデルスゾーンの交響曲全集から採られています）。

ショパンが「夜想曲＝ノクターン」ならばメンデルスゾーンは「無言歌＝歌詞のない歌曲（つまりピアノのみで全てを表現する）」です。ピアニストとしてのダニエル・バレンボイムの全曲集から。普通はたっぷりと響かせる左手のアルペッジョを軽く軽くかき鳴らす「春の歌」が珍しい。

そして作曲者１６歳のときに作曲したという（!!）「序曲」に始まる実に幻想的で楽しい劇音楽「真夏の夜の夢」をチェコ生まれの巨匠ラファエル・クーベリックが颯爽と軽妙なタッチで聞かせます。

これであなたもメンデルスゾーン・ファンになること間違いなし!!
