   戦時下の昭和15年の東京。検閲官・向坂は劇団「笑の大学」の座付き作家・椿に次々と無理難題をふっかけ、直せなければ上演中止だと脚本の書き直しを迫る。が、椿はその要求を聞いてさらに素晴らしい脚本を作りあげていく。そんな2人が、ガチンコ対決を通して次第に不思議なきずなを芽生えさせていく様を描く。
   もともと本作は三谷幸喜が手掛けた2人しか登場しない舞台劇として作られたもの。それを映像として成立させるのはかなり難しかったはず。でもそれを映像ならではの、他の登場人物などを取り入れつつ、懸命に作りあげた努力は素晴らしい。特に劇団の看板スターに小松政夫を起用したのは拍手モノ。また最初は完全に舞台を潰すつもりでいた検閲官が、次第に心変わりをしていく様を、役所広司が絶妙のサジ加減で演じていて魅せられる。（横森 文）

　三谷幸喜さんの舞台演劇を原作としたもの映画化。
とにかく台詞回しの面白さなら保障付。役所広司x稲垣吾郎の演技もさることながら、その計算尽くされた脚本は凄いの一言。「ほんとに121分もあったの?」といった具合に気がつけばエンドクレジット(これまたレトロチックで見ごたえあり。少々文字は見づらかったですが・・)と、まさに時間を感じさせない作り。笑いの要素とシリアスな要素の絶妙なバランスもあり、ただおかしいだけの喜劇ではなく、後半の展開からラストにかけては二人の人間関係にぐっとくるものを感じました。
　喜怒哀楽劇の傑作といったところではないでしょうか。

この映画は、何より、狙いは良いし、内容も満足できるレベルで、決して悪くはなかったと思うのですが、何か、イマイチ、インパクトが弱かった感があります。
少し、間延びした感がありましたので、時間的にも、もっと短かった方が良かったのでは・・・。
それに、役所広司はともかく、一方の、稲垣吾郎はちと、ミスキャストだったのではなかったかと。
もっと、薄っぺらくて、軽い感じの人の方が良かったのでは・・・と。
まあ、彼の名前でないと、客は入らないという営業側の事情があったのかもしれませんが、その意味では、むしろ、廊下でたたずむだけのしょぼくれた案内係の老警官として出ていた名優、高橋昌也の方に存在感を感じましたけどね。

「戦時中に喜劇など不要」という考えの検閲官。
「笑いは大切」という信念をひたすら貫く劇団作家。
その両者の７日間の対決をメインとしたシンプルな構成ながら、
起伏のある展開で飽きさせません。

緊迫した検閲室で巻き起こるこの奇妙な笑いは一体何だ！？

笑いとは何か、戦争とは何かを静かに問いかけてくる傑作です。
