バンドというより革命集団のようなブロック・パーティーは、ロックンロールという媒体に、普通なら哲学講義にふさわしいような真剣さで近づいた。だが、『Silent Alarm』（邦題『サイレント・アラーム』）で、知的でしなやかなロンドンっ子の“自立的ユニット”は、その芸術形式をよみがえらせることに成功しただけではなく、それを徹底的に改革することに限りなく近づいていている。「She’s Hearing Voices」（邦題「シーズ・ヒアリング・ヴォイシズ」）のような初期のシングル曲がなお、名前を3つ挙げるとすれば、ザ・フォール、ジョイ・デイヴィジョン、ギャング・オブ・フォーといったポストパンクとしておなじみのバンドのイメージから抜け出して、自分たち自身のイメージを刻みつけようとしているのに対し、「Like Eating Glass」（邦題「ライク・イーティング・グラス」やとげだらけの「Price of Gas」（邦題「プライス・オブ・ガソリン」）のような新しい曲で、ブロック・パーティーは、新しく生み出した歯切れのいいパーカッションという型と、広がりのあるサウンドスケープ、政治的なものと個人的なものを巧みに絡ませた謎めいたリリックを開拓した。ラッセル・リサックはポストパンクの大げさな特徴やフレットボードを痛めつけたもろくアヴァンギャルドな奏法を捨てて、ギターのサウンドにさまざまな効果を持たせ、ブロック・パーティーの神経質な激しさに真の美しさを加えた。しかし、バンドの最も柔軟な面であるケリー・オケレケのヴォーカルは、怒りをまくし立てることから息もつけない絶望へと変貌している。「奇跡を望んでいるのか?」と「Helicopter」（邦題「ヘリコプター」）で彼はほえる。望んでいる? ならば、『Silent Alarm』はその望みをかなえてくれるだろう。（Louis Pattison, Amazon.com）

　数年前まではガレージロックが猛威を振るっていましたが、現在は８
０年代のニューオーダーやギャング・オブ・フォー、キュアーあたりに
影響を受けたニューウェーブ的な音楽が注目を集めています。アザー
ズ、フランツ・フェルディナンド、インターポールなどのバンドが活躍
していますが、その近年の新しいロックの動きの中心になっているブロ
ックパーティの作品です。

　まず聞いて思ったのがメロディがいいことです。少しひねくれた感じ
はしますが聞きやすく、演奏も特にドラムがカッコいいです。ヴォーカ
ルは結構高めでソウルフルな感じでもあり、いいと思います。

　曲はロックなもの、ポップなもの、インストなど色々そろっていま
す。はじめの方の６曲目までの畳み掛けるような勢いは、スピーディに
聞かせてくれます。この先楽しみなバンドです。

星5つはやりすぎかなとも思うけど、中々のアルバムです。
最初に聴いたときは印象が薄かったが、
どうやら聴いたときの状況や心境が良くなかった。

このアルバムを表現するなら「軽やかな疾走感」といったところです。
ドライブには最適です。（渋滞は除く）
電車に乗っているときに聴くのも良い。（各駅停車は除くｗ）

車窓から見える風景とアルバムが奏でる音楽が、
あなたを軽快な気分にしてくれるでしょう。

話題の新人の話題のアルバムです。黒人独特の粘っこい声で歌っているのにファンクではなくロックになっている。
ギターは軽くリズム重視の楽曲で最近流行のディスコパンク的でもあるが、そこにuk的な優美なメロディーが乗ることにより独特感が生まれている。
完成度も高くよいアルバムではあるが、少しまとまりすぎているのが残念。レベルが高いだけに求めるものも高くなってしまう。
