   名脚本家ロバート・タウンのオリジナル・シナリオ（アカデミー賞オリジナル脚本賞受賞）を、異邦人的姿勢を一貫させた映画作りで知られるロマン・ポランスキー監督がノスタルジックなムードを満載させながら人間のどろどろした運命と関係性に迫っていくハードボイルド・ミステリー。ジェリー・ゴールドスミスのジャジーな音楽も素晴らしい効果を上げている。後に、ジェイク役を気に入ったジャック・ニコルソンが自ら監督主演して、事件の10年後の日々を描いた続編『黄昏のチャイナタウン』も製作された。（的田也寸志）

１９３０年代、ロス･アンゼルスで洒落者の私立探偵ジャック･ギデス（Ｊ・ニコルソン）が巻き込まれた殺人事件。
彼は殺された役人の妻、イブリン（フェイ・ダナウェイ）とその父親で大富豪のノア・クロス（ジョン･ヒューストン）の双方から事件の真相究明を依頼されます。ジャックは次第にどこか謎を秘めたイブリンに惹かれて行くのですが・・・
ロバート･タウンの脚本も上出来です。本来ならハードボイルドとなりそうなストーリーですがニコルソン氏の持ち味なのか全編に渡って不思議なセクシーさが漂っております。フェイ・ダナウェイの訳ありな風情もラストの情感を引き立てていますね。そしてジョン･ヒューストン、流石の貫禄としか言えませんね。
３０年以上も前の作品ですがこのセクシーでゴージャス、そして哀しくもどこか邪悪さの漂う雰囲気には時間は関係ないですね。
ジェリー･ゴールドスミスの手になる音楽が又、ダメ押しでミステリアスで哀愁すら感じさせる作品の世界を完璧なものとしております（実は急遽バトンタッチでお鉢が回ってきたそうでパパッと仕上げたそうですが）。
映画の世界に浸りたい、映画を観たという満足感に浸りたいなら是非。
