ショーターのブールーノートの第１作目にしてこの完成度…。
「…生きとし生ける者すべてにやってくる審判~」といったコンセプトを持った、ジャケを含めプログレを先取りしたような内容の名盤!!
素晴らしい曲の中ショーターはもちろんですが、特にモーガンのプレイも光っています。この金属的できらびやかなトランペットのサウンドが雰囲気にぴったりで、暖かいハバードの音よりここではモーガンが適役で良かったと思います。
個人的には次の『Juju』よりもこちらがより好きで、ブルーノート時代を代表するアルバムと思います。『Speak No Evil』も素晴らしいですが、こっちがいくらか解りやすくショーター１枚目には人に薦めやすいです。
…それにつけてもやっぱＲＶＧエディションは音が良い!!１５００シリーズは音がフラットでもどかしい。ピアノトリオとかなら良いかもね。

アタマのタイトル曲のイントロのピアノソロからいきなり持って行かれてしまった。知的で叙情的的なマッコイがリスナーのイマジネーションをいたく刺激する。つづいて登場するエルヴィンのドラムスが変拍子のワルツでボトムを支える。そこに加わる主役ショーターのテナーと準主役モーガンのトランペットがユニゾンでメロディを歌い上げる。背筋がぞくぞくするほどに美しくスリリングな瞬間だ。テナーソロに移ると、身悶えするようにショーターがリリカルかつ激しくブローする。どこか性的な昂揚を刺激される程にセクシーでもある。モーガンのパワフルで刹那的なトランペットも曲を盛り上げる。もうどこか別世界にトリップしたこのようだ。
２曲目からのOriental Folk Song, Virgo, Black Nileも同様にリリカルで力強いバラッドだ。甘い料理を引き立てるには少量の塩が必要だという。そんなしまった甘さがある。ウェイン・ショーターはブルーノートに多くの傑作を残した。Speak No Evil, Juju, Adam's Apple, Schizopherenia, etc... ショーターワールドが満開になる前の、微妙なバランスの上に成立するまだ少し青い？テナーのリリカルな世界にただただウットリするだけだ。

すばらしい。ショーターでは一番好きです。エルビンがすばらしい。マッコイがすばらしい。そしてリーモーガンまでいる。ブラックナイルのリーモーガン最高です。この盤がもっともっとたくさんの人に聞かれて、ショーターのファンが増えてほしいです。
