ゴルソンからショーターへテナーが替わった時期のＪＭのブルーノートにおける録音。当然ファンキーの色合いが強い時期だが、ショーターのモード改革が徐々に浸透しつつある。それにしても、当時のモーガンはすごい。ちょうどこの頃来日し、ファンキーブームが到来したのだが、その原因の一端は、モーガンのソウルフルでハイノートでバリバリ吹きまくるトランペットのすさまじさからなのではないかと想像する。実際湯川れいこ氏などのコメントも残っているが、モーガンが時代を担う若手の象徴のような存在であったことは間違いない。もちろんショーターのモーダルなサックスも新鮮であっただろうし、御大ブレイキーのナイアガラ瀑布と形容されたロールドラムの魅力にも、痺れまくっていたのである。ゴルソン、モーガン、ショーター、ハバードと続く逸材が去来した黄金時代の只中のＪＭを知る上で、格好のアルバムであろう。

A Night in Tunisia(4049)セッションの残りもの・・・
とはいえ、アルフレッド・ライオンの見事なプロデュース力で、
見事な仕上がりです。
A Nightが「動」ならば、本作は「静」。
とても同じセッションとは思えません。

叙情的な曲が多く、
Shorter作の#4はとても美しくメロディを持つ佳曲です。

ジャケットも◎。

これは、私が初めてジャズを本格的に聴くきっかけになったアルバムです。
当時はLPで擦り切れるくらい聴いたのを覚えています。
やがてCDの時代になっても Blue Note のごたごたのせいか
なかなかCD化されず、最近になってやっと普及版が登場しました。
Lee Morgan , Wayne Shorter , Bobby Timmons , Jymie Merritt , Art Blakey
のきらめくばかりのメンバーで演奏される５曲はいずれも力作で、
タイトル曲の Like Someone In Love , Sleeping Dancer Sleep On
Giantis などリアルタイムに聴くことが出来なかったのが悔やまれて仕方がありません。
モダンジャズうんぬんは関係ありません。これぞ不朽の名作です。
ただ一つ残念なことは、このCDがなぜかLPより音が悪いような気がすることです。
