Japanese 2 on 1 reissue (with earliest release) from early David Grubbs project, 1990 & 1989. The albums were released after Squirrel Bait and before Gastr Del Sol (Jim O'Rourke, Bundy K. Brown & John McEntire). P-Vine. 2005.

素晴らしすぎる。3枚のアルバムを残して解散した伝説のバンド、バストロの2NDと3RDがカップリングで再発されました。しかも新たにライブ盤も発売!おいおい、日本の音楽雑誌ももっと騒いで知らぬ人たちに啓蒙して欲しいぞ！ポストロック以後の人たちにはデビッド・グラブスとジョン・マッケンタイヤが在籍していたバンドとして有名なんでしょうか。既に15年が経過するが今も全く色あせない音がここにあります。学生当時に少しでも安価でと、CDとLPが発売された物は安い方のLPを購入していましたが、このバストロの2NDに限って、内容が素晴らしすぎて、LPを買った翌日にＣＤを買う羽目になったことを覚えています。3RDはもっとすごい!ジャンクに「泣き」が加わるのだ。
さて、サウンドですが、ジャンクとはいっても破壊的なノイズなどで滅茶苦茶しているわけではありません。(そういうバンドもありましたが。)
このバストロの場合、金属ノコギリギター・ハードコアといった趣に前つんのめったバタバタドラムが加わるという、ありそうでなかった、そして実際フォロワーが出てこなかった独自のサウンドで、無理やり例えるとしたら「落ち着きのない他動のジーザスリザート」ってとこかな。よく分んないけど。しかし、確かにこんなサウンドでバンド活動していたら、何故、次はトータスみたいになるのかはよく分る。行き着いちゃったんだな。
ジャンクなのに聴いてて涙が出そうな3RDの４曲目を聴いてくれ!☆５つじゃほんと物足りないんですよ。☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆位つけたい。こうなったら確か未CD化の1STも再発してくれないかな。

「グアポ」もいいですが「ビースト」は大傑作。シカゴ系ファンだけでなくコア系ファンにもお勧め。ナンバーガールなどが好きな人もどうぞ。
痙攣的なカントリー風ギターリフにマッキンタイアの激烈なドラム、変拍子のねじれたブレイク。グラブスのシャウトする意味不明な歌詞。
4曲目、9曲目などの妙な哀愁感もいいです。
ノイズのみの曲やハードコアな収録曲の室内学風リメイクもありトータスやガスターへ移行していく過程も伺えます。

ここに偉そうに書いている私はこれが「バストロ」との初顔合わせだったが、
イントロを聞いて思った、「ヤバい。」とね。
個人的な思いで申し訳ないが、全体の構成要素として「ＵＫパンクの初期衝
動＋デッド・ケネディーズ等の初期ＨＣ＋東海岸の湿っぽさ」のような気が
する。音は軽めだが何処か陰々滅々としていて、節々に暴力が見え隠れする。
とにかく一聴の価値は十分にある。これだけは断言できる。
