このベンハーという映画、いまどきの映画のようにCGのグラフィックス効果を使って映像が綺麗である、なんてことはありません。
また、現在では考えられない長時間作品であり、ちょっとした合間に見るなんてことはできません。
それでも、名作映画に名前を連ね続けているからには、内容において秀でているものがあるからです。
価格も安いので、ベンハーが好きだという人はもちろん、今まで古い映画を忌避してきた人も、ぜひ見ていただきたい作品です。

２枚目に付いている特典映像「メイキング」もなかなか楽しめました。「ベンハー」は何回もリメイクされているが、昔から戦車レースのシーンは必ず付いていたこと。前回の１９２５年版の撮影では死者、怪我人が続出したこと。今回の「ベンハー」ではローマに巨大なセットを作って、いろいろ工夫しながら撮影したことなど興味深かったです。１時間弱の結構長いドキュメンタリーなので、本編を観た後、別の日に観た方が疲れませんよ！

壮大なスケールで描かれているこの映画。ベンハーがローマ法王に会う
シーン。そこには大勢の人が訪れます。それのすべてがエキストラ。
この映画の見所は、ＣＧに頼っていないところです。大型船を大量の
奴隷が動かしていたり、その船同士がぶつかり合ったりするシーンの
迫力は現代にも通用するといっても過言ではないでしょう。
