イタリアの名女流デ・ヴィートとスイスの雄エトヴィン・フィッシャーによる第１番＆第３番、デ・ヴィートの友人アプレアと組んだ第２番のカップリング。
第２番のアプレアとの共演は、デ・ヴィートのお気に入りだったそうだ。

フィッシャーはドイツ・ピアノ音楽の巨匠であり、その風格ある演奏でデ・ヴィートにドイツ音楽の何たるかを教示しようとするかのようなオーラがある。
しかし、デ・ヴィートにとって、そのようなオーラを放つフィッシャーが煙たかったのだろうか、アプレアとの共演ほどの丁々発止のやり取りが感じられない。
デ・ヴィートとフィッシャーの共演は、共演というより、フィッシャーのデ・ヴィートに対する教授的お説教でしかなかったのではないだろうか。
ブラームスの音楽が重く深いということは伝わるが、デ・ヴィートのヴァイオリンの音楽的な存在感は、ことのほか小さい。

アプレアの演奏は、フィッシャーの重さとは裏腹に、風通しのよさを感じる演奏。
デ・ヴィートにとっても、とっつきやすかったのか、フィッシャーのときとは違って表情豊かな演奏を繰り広げている。デ・ヴィートとアプレアの共演で第１番と第３番の演奏が残されればよかっただろうと思う。

その時代最高のヴァイオリニストとピアニストの各々，デ・ヴィートとフィッシャー（最近は，アニー・フィッシャーと区別するため「Ｅ・フィッシャー」とも表記される）。このコンビによるブラームス：ヴァイオリン・ソナタ第１番・第３番，およびアプレーアとの同第２番。

「雨の歌」と呼ばれる第１番，これだけで「買い」だと思う。出だしのメロディ。これは，おそらく古典からロマン派に至るまでのすべての曲の中で，最も美しい旋律であると私は考える。そして，デ・ヴィートが奏でると，弦の音色は人の声となって何かをささやき始める。

しばらくして応えるフィッシャー。応える相手は，ヴァイオリンであると同時にそのささやきだ。第１番は，いわば恋する２人の会話へと変わり，３章をかけて語り合う。これは，作曲者ブラームスのみならず，奏者２人の掛け合いに因るところが大きい。

ブラームス＝「重厚・濃厚」，確かに。しかしまた，このヴァイオリン・ソナタを聴くと，ロマンティシストの繊細な一面のあることが分かる。この点において，あるフランス人作家をして「ブラームス（ちなみに，ドイツ人［付記：レヴュア］）はお好き」を書かせたのだと，私は一人合点している。
