   さまよう一匹狼として、多幸症のレイヴからスピードメタル、アンビエントな音景を渡り歩き、近年のリチャード・メルヴィル・ホールは落ち着こうとしていて、そして充分にニッチだと証明を試みてきたかのようだった。表面上、『Hotel』は最近の2作、『Play』、『18』と同じ傾向を展開している。メランコリックな恋の歌で、エレクトロ・ポップ、ゴスペル、デヴィッド・ボウイの『Heroes』のような傾向だ。このノリは『Hotel』では、あおり立てるようなキーボードの音が決め手の「Beautiful」そしてきらめく楽天的な「Spiders」に見られるが、モービーが停滞していると言っているわけではない。まず、彼は「Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad?」で見られたような重ねたヴォーカルを勇敢にも捨てている。そして自分自身の抑えた、かすかに霊妙なヴォーカルに頼り、ローラ・ドーンとのデュエット、音を薄くしたシンセとドラム・マシンによるニュー・オーダーのカバー「Temptation」はローキーなハイライトだ。だが、モービーはレイヴのルートに回帰して、歌姫による打ち込みの「Very」、そして政治的な感じのする「Lift Me Up」も作っている。ブッシュ政権への軽蔑を隠し、ダークなカーニバル、そしてまとめ上げるようなストリングスとディスコ・ノワールのリズムの曲だ。（Louis Pattison, Amazon.com）

一聴すると、あれあれ？？？
これは、90年代のウルトラボックスとかヤズーではないか。
多分、同年代の私にとっては、ちと恥ずかしいアルバムに違いない。
だってモロなんだもん。
でもね、モビーはそういう奴なんだよね。
いいもの、自分が好きなものを堂々と取り入れるんだよね。
GOのツインピークスだって、誰もサンプリングしないのに、
臆面もなくしてるもんね。

だから、恥ずかしいのを堂々とやっている、モビーの勝ちです。
いい曲あります。それだけでもういいです。

ちなみに、エミネムがモビーをよく攻撃しますが、
それは両者がとても似ているからだと思います。
実体が無いところとかね。
(借り物のラップとダンス＋ソウルミュージックという点ですね)

　ほー、最初に試聴機で聴いた時、Mobyだと気付きませんでした。
　これは、ダンス・ミュージックの括りよりも、普通にロック／ポップス。デジタルなリズムに上で、キャッチーな歌メロをMobyや女性ゲストVo.が歌い上げてます。
　以前より披露してるMobyの中音域中心のVo.自体も、中々良く安心して聴けます。
　個人的には、'80年代ニューウェーブ的な45や、David Bowie風の7が気に入っています。
　ボーナスCDは終始インストですが、これまた従来とは作風を異にするアンビエント・サイドで、歌ものに興味の無い方用、でしょうか？
　もしかしたらMobyの本当のファンには評判が良くないかも知れませんが、実に良く出来たロック／ポップス・アルバムだと思います。

私のように、Mobyがテクノの出であることを知らないで、
プロモの勢いに任せて聴いてしまうと、このアルバムおよびMobyの
基本スタンスがどこにあるのかが判らなくなってしまうのです。
キャリア的に過渡期に入ったのでしょうか？
真っ白状態で聴いた限り、"lift me up, lift me up…"と
知らず知らずに口ずさんでしまいそうな#4のキャッチの強さと、
最後の方のテクノインストの数曲がやはり安心して聴ける感じ。
