　ロングセラーを記録したモーニング娘。の出世作。楽曲としても極めて真面目にクオリティを追及した曲で、グループ史上最高の名曲であると思う。オーディションで、相川七瀬や工藤静香の曲を堂々と歌いこなした名手：福田明日香。彼女が在籍していたこの時期は、結構本格的な曲が存在したのだ。

　「LOVEマシーン」からはおちゃらけパーティ路線に行ってしまったが、初期は歌にも魅力があったので、普段はアイドルに見向きもしない層が隠れファンとして存在していた。年齢的な優位をふりかざして、中澤が福田を追い出してしまったのは非常に痛かったと言わざるを得ない。福田がこのまま音楽をやっていたら、相当の歌唱力を持つソロ・シンガーになっていたはずだった。

　詞は「年上の男性に恋をした、素直になれない女の子」を歌っている。
♪どんな笑顔見せても／心の中が読まれそう／大人ぶった下手な笑顔じゃ／心隠せない
♪大キライ／大キライ／大キライ…大好き！〜Ah

　真っ直ぐすぎて ぶつかってしまい、上手く笑えない、不器用な娘――そんなコが可愛いなぁ〜と思える人にはお勧めである。何となく[つんく]が福田をイメージして作ったように思うのだが、考えすぎだろうか？　10代少女アイドルに、20代〜30代の男性ファン。これにマッチする状況を上手く考えた設定は見事。そして何度聴いても優れた楽曲である。

　どこか懐かしさを感じる歌謡曲的なメロディーに、モダンなビート。初期はそんな作風だった。尚、本CDは8cm → 12cmのリマスター再発。これに伴い、初ライヴ versionを追加収録している。レア音源を収録したBOXセットも出ているので、初期全部欲しい人はそちらもチェックすると良い。

私もモー娘。の中で最高傑作だと思う。というより最期の歌謡曲と言える。
この後の『抱いて　HOLD ON ME』と『MEMORY 青春の光』と合わせてマイナー調３部作とも言われてるらしいが、この『サマーナイトタウン』には及ばないと思う。
強いてこの曲に匹敵するとしたら安部なつみ『トウモロコシと空と風』といいたいところだが、こちらはややノスタルジー（カンバック森高）を感じさせる。
『サマーナイトタウン』の凄さは「何か変なかんじ」と歌われてるまさしくその音階の変なカンジなのだ。この音程あってるの？と聞きたくなるこの気が遠くなる感覚。
つんくは明らかにこの曲のこの部分の成功で以後の成功を導きだしている。
他の曲にもある、この気持ちいい違和感。
ただ、このグループ、ご存知のようにどんどん人が増え、スポットがいろんな人に当たり、
入れ替わりが激しくなると、全く歌謡曲の枠組みを外れてしまい、焦点がばらけてしまうのだ。この頃にいた福田や石黒が凄かったのか、後のメンバーがこの曲を歌った映像を見ても、
このシングルのヴァージョンは超えられない。１回性の凄みがこのヴァージョンにはある。
安部なつみもこの頃の２〜３年がピークだったのだろう。
『LOVEマシーン』以後は私にはCGが歌ってるようにしか見えない。
曲事態もひねりすぎていて、曲の体をなしていない。アイデアを詰め込みすぎなのだ。
この『サマーナイトタウン』と次作『抱いて　HOLD ON ME』までの場末のキャバクラのショータイム感覚がかっこよかったのに、これ以後は高校生や中学生の組み体操みたいに感じるのは、私だけだろうか？
森高の活動休止と時期が丁度重なり合うこの１９９８年〜１９９９年。
確実に「歌謡曲」という「ポップミュージック」は終わったのだ。
ということは『LOVEマシーン』が日本の歌謡曲を壊したのかもしれない。
罪な男よ、つんくさんよ。
