Album Description

Impressive debut recording by keyboard player John Beck (It Bites), drummer Chris Maitland (ex-Porcupine Tree), singer and guitarist John Mitchell (Arena), and bassist Pete Trewavas (Marillion). On December 8th the quartet made their first live appearance for WDRs Rockpalast TV in Cologne in front of an enthusiastic audience. Their musical style can be described as melodic pop rock with progressive elements. Picture will be available in jewel case with slipcase and enhanced booklet.

玄人好みのベテランメンバーによる所謂プログレ界スーパーバンドのKINO、その音は歌モノ主体のpower popで(期待を良い意味で裏切られて)まずニンマリ。お決まりのテクニカルなソロの応酬はほとんど無く、バンドアンサンブルを重視した余裕を感じさせる作りながら、手抜き無しの緻密な今風のサウンド構築でリスナーの期待する英国シンフォプログレ的隠し味も随所に光る好盤である。メンバーは四人とも腕達者だが、特にキーボードのJ.Beckのプレイは特筆に値すると思う。この人、本作では派手なアドリブをほとんどしていない代わりに、バッキングプレイに於ける職人ワザは一聴の価値あり。特に各種キーボードの組合せ方やシンセ系の音色の多彩さは出色の出来で、しかもそれが何ともさりげなく粋である。各楽曲の出来も水準以上でバリエーションに富んでおり、好みにウルサい中年プログレ者の私でも一気に最後まで、しかも繰返し聴き通せる作品です。

甘く切ない感傷を伴うノスタルジックでメランコリックなメロディーを主軸に、各プレイヤーの良い意味で自己主張を抑えた調和の取れたアンサンブルが聴く者を魅了するKinoによる初作。
様々な作品をネットなどを通じて簡単に入手することが可能になり耳が肥えてしまったということもあって「良いな」とは思えても「素晴らしい」と手放しで感動することなど殆ど無かったのだが、本作を聴き細かい理屈抜きでその音楽性の高さに感動してしまった。
転調を繰り返しつつも聴く者の心をつかんで離さない大曲「Loser's Day Parade」（個人的には本作のベスト・チューン）。ブックレット内の写真には思わずびっくりさせられた「Swimming In Woman」。そして美しくもポジティヴな力強さに満ちた「All You See」など、捨て曲など何処にも見当たらない正に完璧な作品である。中でも脱帽ものなのは他の方々が既に指摘しているように、冗長にならず作品の雰囲気作りにしっとりと色を添えるキーボード・ワークであろう。超絶的なテクニックを披露しているわけでも奇抜な音色を聴かせるわけでもないが、そこにその音が無ければならないと聴く者に思わせる「必然性」を作りだしている。
モダンでソフィスティケイトされていながらも、どこか懐かしさを感じさせる正に温故知新な傑作である。まだ聴いたことが無い方には是非お勧めしたい作品である。

かつてのネオ・プログレッシブ・ロック・ムーブメントを支えた強者達が集まって結成した新ユニット。1曲目が結構ハードな曲調なので、この路線でいくのかと思いきや、2曲目からは心地いいフレーズでドラマチックな曲が続き、完成度の高いアルバムになっている。メンバーそれぞれが在籍していたグループの曲調がほどよくミックスされているといった感じか。今後の活動に期待！
