ヴァイとデヴィンとの華麗なる融合。

ヴァイのギターと、デヴィン特有の
ボーカリゼイションが見事なまでにマッチング。

超がつくほどの傑作である。

1993年に発表された変態系ギタリストの雄、スティーヴ・ヴァイによる作品です。ボーカルに新進気鋭のDevin Townsendを起用し、脇を固めるのはスーパードラマーTerry Bozzio、ベースにTMスティーヴンスというスゴ腕のテクニシャンたち。アルバムタイトルからして「セックスと宗教」という根源的な問題（？）であるように、本当の意味では我々東洋人には理解できないであろう、変態世界が繰り広げられています。宗教的高みを再現したかと思えば、実に猥雑で生理的にどうなのかと思える変態サウンドとの同居。敬虔なクリスチャンが聴いたら真っ青になるのではと思える、宗教と世俗の融合。これらをギター1本で再現してしまうヴァイの表現力には相変わらずめまいを感じます。こうして考えると、はじめは違和感を感じた「嫌らしい」Devin Townsendのボーカルも、ヴァイのギターとあいまって必然性を帯びて聴こえてくるはずです（でも、このボーカルが嫌いという人は多いでしょうね。それだけ賛否両論を巻き起こす歌声です）。

たとえ歌詞の内容に深く入りこめなくても、この作品で展開されていることはまさに「命を張ったタブーへの挑戦」であることくらいは分かります。あまりに過激で危険な香りが充満したこの作品は、良識ある人にはとてもお勧めできません。もちろん変態音楽をこよなく愛する人にとってはマストアイテムであると断言できます。
