電気グルーヴやエイフェックス・ツイン以降からテクノを聴き出した方には信じられないことかもしれないが、’９０年代の始め頃にＵＲ作品の日本版がリリースされていた時期があった。アルバム「ＲＥＶＯＬＵＴＩＯＮ　ＦＯＲ　ＣＨＡＮＧＥ」ほか数枚出たのだが、当時は派手なハードコア・テクノが全盛の時代。テクノブーム以前のジュリアナ東京世代にＵＲのストイックな音は理解されず、そのうち日本版ＣＤは契約切れに。ＵＲ作品を日本で、しかもＣＤで聴く機会はオムニバスやＤＪｍｉｘＣＤに頼るしかなくなったわけである。

そこへこのアルバムである。ＧＡＬＡＸＹ　２　ＧＡＬＡＸＹを始めとするマイケル・バンクス（マッド・マイク）の活動の集大成と呼べる内容で、「ＨＩ-ＴＥＣＨ ＪＡＺＺ」や「ＪＵＰＩＴＥＲ　ＪＡＺＺ」、上記「ＲＥＶＯＬＵＴＩＯＮ．．．」にも収録された「ＳＯＭＥＴＩＭＥＳ　Ｉ　ＦＥＥＬ　ＬＩＫＥ」等名曲の数々に加え、最近のＴＩＭＥＬＩＮＥ名義による「ＲＥＴＵＲＮ　ＯＦ　ＴＨＥ　ＤＲＡＧＯＮ」、さらには新曲も２曲収録と、期待を裏切らない２枚組み。まさにマスト・アイテムといえよう。また日本版で聴くことが困難になる日が来ないともいえないので、こういう機会に買っとくのが吉である。

今やテクノには沢山の種類があるが、その中でもデトロイトテクノは一際異彩を放っており、さらにその中でも最高なのがＵＲで、その傑作群がＣＤアルバムとして普通に買えるとは！
ＵＲの音楽は、世界で最も叙情的なテクノとして有名だ。が、泣きのメロディとかじゃない。ゴスペルにも似た、尊厳な恍惚感や陶酔感がある。無論、テクノだからそんなに偉そうなもんではない。むしろチープだ。スーファミみたいな音かもしれない。しかし、そんな音に魂を揺さぶられる。
本作を、星空の夜、朝焼けの広がる早朝、晴れた何でもない普通の日、散歩しながら聴くと、ここではないどこかへ誘われるようで、意気揚々とする。テクノだが、そんな音楽だ。

デリック・メイ、カール・クレイグ、808ステイトなどデトロイトテクノ周辺の音は聴いたことあったが、今回初めて本家本元というべきURの音源を聴いてみて格の違いを思い知った。これはいいわ。
　
はじめはデトロイトテクノという言葉からもっとゴリゴリの、尖鋭的な音をイメージしてたので実際にはこんなに聴き易いというか、ジャズファンクよりのメロディアスな音だったので少し驚いた。曲によってはインコグニートやレベル４２っぽいのもあるし。
でも、聴き込む内にそういう独特のいなたさがツボにはまってくる。特に明るくもなければ暗くもなく、派手でもなければ地味でもないのだが、地に足のついた感じで確実に元気になる音である。作り手が100%楽しみながら音楽への愛を胸に、自分らしさというソウルを込めて作り上げた音楽という気がする。それにこの骨太さというかぬくぬくとした感じ、これこそが機能優先のダンスミュージックからは抜け落ちてしまっているところのファンクネスであり、聴いていて精神衛生にいいことこの上ない。あえて過度に洗練されることを避け、手作り感覚を残しているような音の感触があたかも玄米フレークのような滋味を感じさせる。

野田努の書いた『ブラック・マシン・ミュージック』というデトロイトテクノについての本を読みながら聴くと、この音の背景や込められたメッセージも良く分かってさらに楽しめること請け合い。それを踏まえた上で一言で表現するならば、哲学書を読みながら頭の中で著者と対話しているような感覚を味合わせてくれるテクノ、ということになると思う。
