歌舞伎舞踊の大曲「京鹿子娘道成寺」をモチーフに、歌舞伎界女形スター・中村福助、牧瀬里穂共演で描いたラブストーリー。突然「娘道成寺」の衣装で投身自殺してしまった双子の妹の謎を探るため、姉は妹が弟子入りしていた富太郎に接近するが…。

2004年夏に公開された歌舞伎と舞踊の世界を舞台に究極の愛を描いた「娘道成寺 蛇炎の恋」を映像商品化。歌舞伎舞踊「京鹿子娘道成寺」で有名な清姫の悲恋伝説をモチーフに、究極の純愛ストーリーを描く。中村福助、牧瀬里穂ほか出演。

歌舞伎の世界を舞台に女の情念を描く一本。
福助さんの美しい舞いは素晴らしく、ラストの高野山でのシーンは感動もの。
ただ、メインテーマが上手く描かれたかというと疑問が残ります。
いかにもなＣＧ処理も興ざめでしたし、全体に消化不良を覚えました。
その中で白眉だったのが歌舞伎の世界を飛び出して大衆演劇で名を成した花丸の存在。彼が居るシーンには説得力があり、彼を主役に一本映画を撮っても面白い作品になるのではないかと思いました。
風間トオルってこんなに色気がある役者になったんだなぁと驚きました。

もうすこし丁寧に仕上げれば、もっとよい映画になったのではないか。あるいは、芸術性のある高尚な映画にしようとしたかったのかもしれないが、かなり背伸びのしすぎ。大衆向き路線という手もあったろうに。
チープなCGも興ざめする（よくもわるくも角川映画）。たぶんスタッフがわるすぎる。
このようなレベルの映画が日本で生産されていることに驚いた。

しかしながら、中村福助の舞台場面はすごい。それだけでこのDVDを買う価値はあるだろう。（あたりまえだが、牧瀬・須賀の踊りと比べれば歴然）
風間トオルもよい。

ストーリは、先が少々読めてしまってハラハラドキドキ感が物足りなかったです。中村福助丈演じる、村上富太郎の謎もいまいち分からなかったのが、残念です。でも、福助丈の女形が綺麗なこと。牧瀬里穂さんの演じた遥香の歌舞伎化粧よりも美しかったです。歌舞伎の舞台を演じている、役者側からの目線で見れるシーンもあり、普段では、絶対見られない視線から見れる舞台の様子は、歌舞伎ファン以外でも感動ものです。特典映像の「中村福助、雨の道成寺で踊る」も、とても良かったです。
