故実相寺監督の脂の乗り切った時代の名作。これまでのビデオはかなり暗く見難かったが、ニューマスターで発売。加賀恵子がエロッぽく、不思議な女優さんで他の映画も見たくなる魅力を持っている。江戸川乱歩の原作は、少し時代がズレた異次元の世界で、大正時代のＳＭ感覚と古典的なのぞき趣味が下敷きとなっている。映画はこのレトロな雰囲気を漂わせ、原作に忠実。しっかりした役者構成とカメラアングルで映画としての完成度が極めて高いと思う。同監督の他作品には、ややオタク系のものもあるが、本作品は誰でも楽しめる、雰囲気に酔える映画。

1920年代半ばの東京本郷の下宿屋・東栄館だけが本作品の舞台である。下宿屋の名称のみならず、作品の骨格部分がほぼ原作通りである一方、ストーリーに関与しない、原作に無かった東栄館の怪しげな住人の描写も豊富である。

そこで起きた殺人事件の犯人を嶋田久作演じる明智小五郎が、心理的に追いつめていく。東栄館から漂ってくる、時代を反映した退廃的雰囲気の中だからこそ起きたと言える犯罪で、加賀恵子のあけすけな性行為、清水ひとみと寺田農による倒錯的美学、宮崎ますみが見せる狂気などが、その雰囲気を盛り上げる。

エロスとデカダンスを全編に漂わせ、加賀恵子をフィーチャーしたところなどは、まさに実相寺昭雄らしい作品と言えるだろう。

　江戸川乱歩の世界観と実相寺監督とは、ほんとうに相性がよかったのだと、実感する一本です。
基本線は原作と忠実に展開しますが、オリジナルとして、遠藤以外の東栄館の面々のエピソードが肉付けされています。その住人達の、いかにも乱歩的といったぐあいの胡散臭さ。
とくに、宮崎ますみ演じるバイオリン嬢のエキセントリックぶりは、彼女が主役の乱歩のはなしがよみたい・・・とまでさせてしまうところ。
　今日になっての復帰がたいへん喜ばしいかぎりです。
　
　そして、それこそ煙草の煙のように、ゆうらり、と消えてはまた、ふう、と現れる、嶋田氏による明智小五郎の不確かな魅力。
　
　加賀恵子の濡れ場が無意味に多く、ぼかしで引いてしまった、という悔いはありますが、個人的に『D坂の殺人事件』より出来は良いかと。
　ご期待にそって、画格はとことん、ななめです。
