1月にリリースされたアルバムがほとんど口をそろえてその年のベスト・アルバムのひとつに数えられることはあまりない。しかし、アントニー・アンド・ザ・ジョンソンズの2作目のフルレングス・アルバムは驚くほど美しく、なるべくしてそうなったという感がある。彼の友人であり“同胞”であるデヴェンドラ・バンハート同様、アントニーはドラマティックなアートソングの才を持つ逸材のシンガーソングライターだ。しかし、天使のようなアントニーはあまりに独特であり、異質なものと誤解されることが非常に多いに違いない。彼の歌はブルージーなオペラ・シンガーのようで、息をつぐわずかな間に音質は男性的にも女性的にも変化する。それをたとえられるとすれば、近いのはニーナ・シモンの声くらいだろう。アントニーの正直な詞は、J・T・リロイの短編の中のように、詩と微妙なユーモアをたしかに交えて深い傷とかなえがたい願いをテーマにしている。ロックというよりは室内楽に近いことも多い多才なバンドに助けられ、支えられて、アントニーは『I Am A Bird Now』（邦題『アイ・アム・ア・バード・ナウ』）を幻想的なアルバムに仕上げた。そしてもちろん、ルーファス・ウェインライト、デヴェンドラ、ルー・リード、ボーイ・ジョージも全員ここに登場している。（Mike McGonigal, Amazon.com）

Singer-songwriter/pianist Antony is one of those rare artists who, while not unprecedented, still emerges as singular. His is an an arresting vibrato and his presence is gender-anxious and confrontational in its vulnerability. His fey yet firm poise is quivering, tension fraught, but never engulfingly overwrought. Menored by Lou Reed, Boy George, Rufus Wainright and Devendra Barnhart, Antony presents a unique spectoral sound of faded, frayed glamour. This his second album I am a Bird Now is a polished gilded productions including a bluesy purr worthy of Nina Simone in "My Lady Story" and "Fistful of Love," with its Muscle Shoals horn blurts-meet-Weimar cabaret swoons via The Velvet Underground's shuffle. As a whole, I Am a Bird Now exhibits a downy affinity for androgynous eccentricity. Rough Trade. 2005.

知られているキーワードは両性具有、倒錯、男性として生まれ女性として生きる人。イメージ先行で聴いたアルバム。恐らくそういう系譜で聴いてると多くの歴史を内包するアルバムという事になるんだろう。でも詳しいことは知らない。ただアルバムは圧倒的な作風が素晴らしい。

微かに震えるファルセットでとても丁寧に囁き歌う声とそれに寄り添う、或いは牽引するピアノ。Hope There's Someoneでは後半の連打されるピアノと重なり合うヴォーカルの高揚感が素晴らしい。聖歌のような響き。力強く歌われるFor Today I Am a BoyはSSW色も感じる冒頭から、オペラのクライマックスのような大きな波が訪れるまで2分強の短いトラックにここまで詰め込むのはスゴい。楽曲の構成力、繊細なメロディー、シンプルな編成でレンジを広げる演奏の表現力と歌。大した人だなぁ。。

必要最小限のバンドアンサンブルと
アントニーの歌声。

クラシカルな響きと
グラマラスな美しさを湛え
甘く耽美にうつろう旋律に
鳥肌ものの戦慄を覚える。

ベッドに横たわる女性の
モノトーンのジャケットが
強烈な吸引力を放つ。

ジャケット写真は、
エイズで亡くなったニューヨークの写真家、
ピーター・ヒュ―ジャーの代表作のひとつとされる連作
「Candy Darling On Her Deathbed」から
遺族の承認を経て使用されている。

男性として生まれ、女性として生きた
キャンディー・ダーリングを思うとき
ベルベット・アンダーグラウンドの
「キャンディ・セッズ」が想起され
アンディ・ウォーホールの
幻影を見る。　

両性具有の苦悩、性の倒錯
そして果てなき芸術の探求。

音楽をアートの領域にまで引き上げた
ヴェルベッツを継ぐ
ニューヨークの光と影。

ルー・リードは

ビョークのヴォルタやルーファスウェインライトのアルバムにも参加して引っ張りだこなシンガーソングライターの二枚目のアルバム、とにかく痛いくらい胸に刺さる繊細な音楽です。両性具有ということでの苦しみとかももちろんあってそれが反映されてるとはあると思います。声はなんかブライアンフェリーに似てる。そんな恐ろしいくらい純粋な声で歌われる情感溢れるメロディ。悪いわけないです。冒頭Hope There's Someone を聞いただけでこの人がどれだけ才能溢れる人なのかわかるはず。心の奥底まで染み込みます。僕の大好きなルーファスが参加してるのも嬉しい。なんか両性具有ということで色物的に見る人もいるみたいですが、この人は本物のアーティストです。必聴。
