８０’ｓを語る上で、外せないのがこのブームタウン・ラッツです。
このアルバム、日本名「哀愁のマンデイ」は、７９年発表の彼らの代表作です。
やはりタイトル曲「哀愁のマンデイ」の素晴らしさは特筆でしょう。
壮大なピアノ前奏から始まり、絶妙なサビ、ダイナミックな展開、
正しく８０’ｓを代表する印象に残る名曲のはずです。
ところが、何故か７０’ｓ８０’ｓコンピ集には収録されていないので、
このアルバムを買う必要があったりする訳です。
ところで、名曲「哀愁のマンデイ」は、
アルバムバージョンとシングルバージョンが存在し、
もちろんここに収録はアルバムバージョンなのですが、
シングルバージョンより後半のサビの部分の繰り返しが長い編集のテイクになっていて、
マニアックに貴重なのです。
ボーナス曲収録のこのＣＤは、日本盤も発売されていますので、
ケース等の作りがていねいな日本盤がいい人は、そちらをどうぞ！！

他のレビュアーの方が書いていらっしゃることが全てですが、さらにもうひと押しさせて頂きます。
ライブ・エイドで有名になって、その後完全に忘れ去られてしまったボブ・ゲルドフが、かつてすごくカッコいいバンドを率いていたこと、それを証明するのがこのBOOMTOWN RATSの最高傑作「FINE ART…」です。20代前半は、歌詞をすべて覚えるくらいレコードで聴いていたアルバムで、やっと出たかという感じのCD化、とても嬉しく思います。
「何気なしに口ずさんでいたヒットナンバーが、実はもの凄いメッセージ・ソングだった」という言葉を地で行く、痛烈な歌詞と、あくまでポップなメロディー、薬味の効いたアレンジを擁した楽曲の数々。「I DON'T LIKE MONDAYS」は大ヒットしましたが、現在の認知度は？？？。この機会に若い人たちにもこの曲を知ってほしいと思います。もちろん他の収録曲も素晴らく、「WHEN THE NIGHT COMES」などは、久しぶりに聴いて鳥肌が立ちました。
ボブ・ゲルドフはこのアルバム制作前後の期間、まさに湯水のごとくソングライティングのアイデアが溢れてくる状態だったと見えて「僕とミック・ジャガーが並んで歩いていたら、今のファンは僕の方にサインをもらいにくるよね」などと発言、顰蹙を買ったりしてましたが、それくらい自信家になっても仕方ないです。こんなに冴えまくっていたのですから。ただ、それが数年と続かなかっただけの話で…。
いろんな人に再評価してほしいアルバムですが、個人的には、RCA時代のキンクスが好きな人に、絶対の自信を持ってお勧めします。これもまた、社会に抑圧されたオーディナリー・ピープルのドラマなのです。

８０年代の名盤の１枚！
それはボブ・ゲルドフが衝撃な事件を耳にするところからはじまる。
１９７９年１月２９日・月曜日、サンディエゴの少女がライフル銃で１１人を負傷させる、うち２名は死亡。彼女は「月曜日が嫌いだから」と語ったという。
ゲルドフはこのニュースから名曲「哀愁のマンデイ」を書き上げ、５月５日ニューヨークでの公演の中のアンコールで新曲としてピアノだけで歌った。
７月にイギリスで同曲が発売されるとイギリスで騒然となり、２週目でNO.１に輝き４週キープする。国内プレスだけでは間に合わずフランス、ドイツでも生産されたという。
ウルトラ・ヒットとなるがアメリカでは、その内容からラジオ局がオン・エアーを控え、また少女の両親、弁護士が発売中止を求める等でマイナー・ヒット(７３位)で終わっている。
そういったいきさつの中でこのアルバムから＃2が全英１３位、＃1も４位を記録している。
またうれしいことに今回はボーナス・トラックつきです。
