エレクトリック･マイルスものの中でも評価の高いアルバムです。
何といっても、収録曲が2曲ですから、各メンバーが一体となったグルーブ感をたっぷり堪能できます。(こういうのが好きな人ならね･･･)
ビル･ラズウェルがリミックスしたくなったのもうなずけます。
このアルバムはジャック･ジョンソンという黒人ボクサーのドキュメンタリー映画で使用された音楽を収録したものです。その意味では「死刑台のエレベーター」と同じです。(内容は全然違いますが･･･)
ちなみに、マイルスが音楽を担当したジャック･ジョンソンのドキュメンタリー映画は日本でも一時ビデオが出ていました。多分ビデオは廃版でDVDも未だ出てないと思います。(出る可能性は低いかも･･･)
レンタルビデオ屋か中古ビデオ屋を気長に探せば見つかるかも知れません。私はたまたま近所のレンタルビデオ屋で見つけました。音はあまりよくありませんが、観ておく価値はあると思います。

1967年7月17日、コレクティブ・インプロビゼーションというベクトルを指し示していたジョン・コルトレーンが死んだ。多くのジャズ・ミュージシャンの精神的支柱であった彼の死後、もう一人の精神的支柱であるマイルスがどう動くか、ジャズ全体が彼の動向に注目していた。それが60年代の終わりのジャズの渾沌とした状況だった。そしてマイルスはジャズ・ファンクに突っ走る。

1969年8月の3日間CBSスタジオで録音された『ビッチズ・ブリュー』から、マイルスが一時沈黙するまでの間に演奏された作品群は、ジャズ・ファンクという強烈なベクトルに、才能あるミュージシャンを次々と放り込み、その渾沌から何が見えてくるかをマイルス自身も若手も同時体験した時期だったとぼくには思える。

こういうことはマイルス以外誰もしなかったし成しえなかった。年齢がいったミュージシャンのほとんどは自らの年齢を鑑み、冒険を忘れ、スタイルを固定し、ひたすら枯れて行くような静的方向へと固まるばかりだ。しかしマイルスにとって年齢とは単なる数字であって、今日は昨日に1を足した前進の加算でしかなかった。真の天才は年齢がない。

マイルスの音楽を素のままに、火の玉のままに残すことが意味があることなのだ。これぞエレクトリック・マイルス、なアルバムだ。

このアルバムの主役は、ギターのジョン・枕不倫、もといマクラフリン。天才的かつ変態的なカッティング。御大マイルスの逆鱗に触れぬよう、ソロはあまり弾きまくらず、バッキングに徹しているところがよい。
わたしは彼のマハヴィシュヌ・オーケストラなどを聴くと、「おいおいそんなに弾きまくるなよー！」とつっこみを入れたくなるタイプなので、彼のベストワークはこのアルバムではないかと思っています。
ドラムのビリー・コブハムも同じく、叩きまくらずいい感じ。ベースのファンキーなマイケル・変だー損、もといヘンダーソンは、いつも外れなし。イントロの二人のからみ、尻がムズムズしてきます。うーんロックしてるねえ。
そして御大マイルスのトランペットの一発目が入るところ、わたしはいつもここでイってしまいます。後は心地よい演奏に身をゆだねるだけ。なんともカッコいいロック・アルバム。
