テクニックもさることながら、常に前進し続ける姿勢にいつも頭が下がる。

BEAMSやBEYONDなどに代表されるこれまでのオリジナル曲は、どちらかといえば洋楽テイストが強いものだった。誰にも真似できないプレイで洋楽器とコラボし、三味線の持つ可能性を引き出した楽曲の数々は十分すぎる驚きを与えてくれ、何より新鮮だった。

本作はそういった作品群とは趣きを異にする。
日本古来の伝統である民謡音楽と正面から向き合い、そのエッセンスを上妻流に抽出して、かつ全くのオリジナルとして成立させているのである。素晴らしい。
新しい音を追求すればこそ民謡に立ち返るのは、しごく当然の流れだったのかもしれない。

それにしても、民謡をルーツにして作曲した、と言いながら、つむぎ出す音がいわゆる民謡とは違った形で響いているところが凄い。「3.祭り囃子」「5.ソーラン節」など、和太鼓・小泉謙一氏との相性も抜群。熊本出身者としては「11.田原坂」も趣深く聞かせてもらった。

とにかく「時の旅人」である。

スキル的な素晴らしさはよくわかる。
しかしながら、この曲を生み出したという事実が、上妻を「三味線が上手な人」という枠組みから解放していると言える。
彼は名プレイヤーでありながら名コンポーザーなのだ、という実感が味わえる一曲だと思う。

最初、聞いて「あれ？上妻、また腕上げたのぉ、今までだって充分人間離れしてたのにぃ」って感じでした。何だろう？この音…ギター？バンジョー？琵琶？のはずないし…ガムラン？のわけないし……しいて言えば人間の声に近いかな？ニュアンスあるなあ……1の音に100の情報が載っている！
　
　歪みと軋み、愚痴やら悲鳴やら慟哭やら、100のサウンドに0.5の有益な情報すら載っていない雑音と不協和音の日常に埋もれていると、上妻の音色は本当に「掃き溜めに鶴」って感じです。

「時の旅人」は歌謡曲みたいな軽い曲だけど上妻に弾かれるとヤラレル。厳重に封印して２重に鍵掛けておいた過去が一気に蘇ってしまうので、思い出したくない昔のある方は要注意です。
「刹那」は本人の解説読んで聞くと大爆笑！ほんとにそう聞こえるから。常縁河原の浮遊霊(?!)もびっくりして生き返りそうなスピード感です。
「収穫祭」は個人的に一番好き。これが「黒石よされ節」にインスパイアされて出来た曲だというなら、「上妻」というシステムの分析力と再構築力にはひれ伏すしかない。
「田原坂」は歴史を俯瞰で捉える情緒。間奏部分は情感たっぷりで聞き応えあります。

このＣＤ全編通していえることですが、上妻の表現力が重層的なので、こちらの心理状況により何回聞いても違う音が拾える。ＣＤの装丁とかは「和」を全面に出しているのでいささか引き気味だったんですけど、中身は「和魂洋才」ではなくで「洋魂和才」な感じですね。

ところで上妻よ、ルーツの再確認は出来たか？上妻には何時までも、グローバルスタンダードな音楽スピリッツのバイリンガルでいて欲しいよ。
