日本生まれの日本語に徹底的にこだわったワープロソフト。2005になって、一太郎、および周辺ソフト群の完成度は頂点になったと思う。MSワードとの熾烈な対立で、オフィススイートの道を選び敗退。その後、地味だが着実なアップデートを積み重ね、最近では同社の最大の強みであるナレッジマネジメント戦略を軸に、コンセプトを生み出す仕掛けをワープロと融合している。思考を並べ、階層化し、テンプレート化して再利用するフローをデフォルト化するなど、｢言葉の本質｣を追究した完成度はすばらしい。また、周辺ソフトもあくまでも思考の創出を支援するもので、連関性も高い。
　しかし、一太郎が対象としているビジネスマンは、ここまでの完成度を｢言葉｣で表現しなくなり始めている。むしろ、パワーポイントのようなチャートが取って代わっていると言ってもよい。また、実際のワープロの使用方法は、思考創出ではなく、決められたテンプレートの再利用など、｢思考そのもの｣より、汎用性、ネットワーク性の方が有利になってきており、今後、ワードに一矢報いるのは至難の業だろう。完成度が高いだけにもったいないソフトだ。ぜひ、しっかりとしたターゲティングと使用用途の提案をし、独自の進化をしていって欲しい。
