７２年発表の１ｓｔ。ソフト・マシーンを脱退したロバート・ワイアット(Dr) が、元キャラバンのデイヴ・シンクレア(k)、元デリヴァリーのフィル・ミラー(g)、元クワイエット・サンのビル・マコーミック(b) と結成したグループ。ゲストでジャズ系のキーボード奏者のデイヴ・マックレエが参加している。本作はワイアットが脱退する前のソフト・マシーンをほぼ踏襲した内容を持っており、彼が関わった作品としては非常に分かりやすいものの一つである。４作目以降、非常にシリアスになっていったソフツ本家と初期の本家のユーモアを保った分家という位置付けで考えると分かりやすいし、それくらい本作は初期ソフツの雰囲気をそのまま伝えている。楽器編成が若干異なり、ピアノが主体になっているのとデイヴ・シンクレアのポップス的な要素がかなり加味されているため、ややソフツと違った印象を受けるかもしれないが、ソフツ本体がこういう音楽性へ変化した可能性を含めて非常に興味深い作品だと思う。またソフツよりも非常に聞きやすいのも特徴だ。
収録曲のほとんどは緩やかなインストによるジャズ・ロックだが、１．はあまりにも有名なヴォーカル曲。メロトロンのフルートとピアノ、簡素なパーカッションをバックにセンチメンタルなワイアットの歌声があまりにも印象的な名曲中の名曲だ。

ソフトマシーンが本来持っていたユーモアを取り戻したくてワイアットが結成したマッチングモール。

緩やかなメロトロンにのって牧歌的ほのぼのメロディーで歌う『O CAROLINE』から始まるが、
その後はこんな曲はひとつもないあたりもユーモアなのかな。

後には延々と初期ソフトマシーンのようなジャズロックが続く。

正直言ってこのバンドは気負った感が否めない。
『O CAROLINE』は名曲だけど、狙った感が強いし、後に続くジャズロックもプログレ好きにはアピールするかもしれないが、そこまで。

この後のワイアットのソロ数作品の方が音楽として完成度が高く、余裕のあるユーモアで充ちていると思う。
