入手困難だった名画『フレンチ・コネクション』とその続編のサントラをありがたくもカップリングして１枚のＣＤにぎっしり収めてくれたという、もう涙がちょちょ切れそうなアルバム。
なんてったって音楽担当が変拍子ビッグバンドの鬼才ドン・エリス。
彼は当然のようにこの仕事でグラミー賞ジャズ部門ベストジャズアレンジ賞を獲得しています。
とにかく現代音楽もかくやと言わんばかりのアヴァンなサウンドながら、全体に漂うクールな雰囲気やヤバいリズム、むやみやたらとカッコいいメロディなどが相まって、その中身の濃さは相当なものに仕上がっており、もう単なるＢＧＭの枠にはとどまっていません。
ドン本人も、４つバルブの付いた微分音トランペットを吹きまくっています。
とにもかくにも、70年代音楽が残した世界級の大傑作、聴かぬは損々ですよ！

joszynoriszyraoさんのレヴューを別のサイトで見て，すぐさま購入を決断してリンクしたら，このページにもレヴューが。しかし，お詳しいですね（なんか，チャットのノリですが）。まだ商品は届いてないのですが，とにかく嬉しくてメールしました。なにせ，この映画の大ファンなので。とくに，ポパイがシャルニエをマンハッタンの街頭からグランドセントラル駅構内まで執拗に尾行していくシーンの背景に流れていたと見られる“Subway"という曲のドライブ感はハンパじゃなかっただけに，今から楽しみにしています。
ドン・エリスに関しては，12年ほど前に，この映画の作曲家という知識のみでout of nowhere, live at monterey, new ideasの３つのアルバムを購入して聞いていたのですが，なにせjazzに疎い上に，身近にドン・エリスを知っているjazz funが一人もいなかったせいもあって，この人のjazz界における評判を知る機会が全くありませんでした。ただし，自分もトランペットを吹くことから，好みは別として，単純にjazz　playerということだけで，大いに興味はもっています。「変拍子ビッグバンドの鬼才」とされる彼の作品の醍醐味が，私には正直なところよくわかっていません。
今回の購入を機に，Electric Bath，Connection，Tears of Joyなども併せて発注したので，是非その辺のところを聞き込んでみようかと思っています。『フレンチ…』のサントラはオスカーこそ逃しましたが，しっかりグラミーをゲットしているのですね。知りませんでした。同じ年に公開された『ダーティ・ハリー』のラロ・シフリンもなかなかでしたけどね。

国内では一度も発売されたことがない（米国でもたぶん、初めてのリリースではないかと思います）幻のサウンドトラック盤、しかも第一作と第二作のカップリングです。解説によれば、音源はれっきとした３５ミリフィルムの磁気サウンドトラックからのものだそうで、そのため曲によってモノラルのものも混ざっています。メインテーマ曲がこんなしっかりしたステレオ音源で残されていたというのにまず驚き、かつ感激しています。故ドン・エリスが手掛けた数少ない映画音楽で、ＣＢＳ盤「ショック・トリートメント」でも試みたアンプリファイドされたトランペットの特殊な音色を生かしたサウンドも使っています。全世界でもわずか３０００枚の限定プレスとのことで、完全なマニア向け、この機会に買っておかないと、今後、生きているうちには永遠に手に入らなくなりそうですので、ご興味がある方は是非どうぞ。
