シルヴァー名義のアルバムだが、リーダーが代わっても、本作がメッセンジャーズの代表作であることに変わりはない。
全編にシルヴァーのカラーが溢れているのは当然のこととしても、ここは、素直に彼の作編曲能力を褒め称えたい。６．８．などは彼の生涯の傑作と申して良い。ただし、ゴロゴロいう彼のピアノソロには、好き嫌いがあるかもしれない。
メッセンジャーズの名前と引き替えに、ほとんどのメンバーを引き連れて脱退したシルヴァーだが、意外にもその後の彼のグループは、傑出した作品を余り多くは生み出していない。逆にブレイキーの方はタレント発掘能力を発揮して、若いミュージシャンに活躍の場を提供して大成功した。リー・モーガン、ベニー・ゴルソン、ウェイン・ショーターなど、ブレイキーの元から巣立った個性豊かな才能は、枚挙にいとまがない。
本作のようなアルバムが好きな人には、同時期のブレイキー名義の「バードランド」や「カフェ・ボヘミア」も絶対の推薦作だ。

ジャズを聴きたいけど、どのアルバムを買えばいいのか分からないそこのあなた。このアルバムをお買いなさい。そして2曲目の「クリーピン・イン」6曲目の「ザ・プリーチャー」8曲目の「ドゥードリン」を、何も考えずに、何度も何度もお聴きなさい。この3曲のうちのいずれかはあなたの心を掴むはずです。なぜならこんなに親しみやすいメロディーのジャズは他にはないからです。こんなに楽しいメロディーを聴いてなんとも思わないのであればジャズを聴くのは諦めた方がいいと思います。それくらい楽しい曲が満載の明るいアルバム。名盤です。

結成当初はいろいろと取りざたされていたジャズ・メッセンジャーズの動向ではあるが、結局のところブレイキーとシルバーの間に何かがあった訳ではなさそうだ。単純に親分肌のブレイキーと学究肌のシルバーの間で音楽的なかみ合いが気迫だったのだろう。それは、この後数年の間の彼らの諸作を聴けばわかる事だ。さて本作はブルーノートで唯一のシルバー名義のジャズ・メッセンジャーズで録音されたものだ。フロントはもちろんドーハムとモブレー、文句なしの快演が聴かれる。
