当時のブルーノート・レーベルのオルガン奏者には、ジミー・スミスといった超の付くスーパープレイヤーがいた。シングルやアルバムを連発し、レーベルの経営もその売り上げでかなり助けられていたと聞く。そんな彼に続くオルガン・プレイヤーとしてプロデューサーのライオンが白羽の矢をたてたのが、この「ベイビー・フェイス・ウィレット」だ。本作ではフレッド・ジャクソンのテナーをフロントに、あとはオルガントリオのフォーマットともいうべき、ギターとドラムを従える。ジミー・スミスのような熱演ではないが、アーシーでブルージーなそのプレイは好感がもてる。後年、ウィレットの事をお手本にした有名ミュージシャンも多く、まさにミュージシャンズ・ミュージシャンだったのだろう。ただ、まだこの当時は時代が彼についていけなかったようで、ブルーノートでは、次のリーダー作を残してシーンから去る事となる。

この作品とにかくアーシーな雰囲気の大ブルース、大ソウル選手権大会という雰囲気。とにかくコテコテのソウルミュージックをこれでもかこれでもかと聴かせる。男っぽくて野太いFred Jacksonのサックス、丸くてブルージーなGrant Greenのギターでノリノリになり、そしてBaby Face Willettがニワトリのような甲高い音を速いピッチで機関銃のように繰り出し、感極まるとロングトーンを発射。Jimmy Smithに比べると、より油っぽくコテコテとして、下世話に盛り上がる感じである。ベストトラックは、その中でもいかにも「く〜っ、これぞブルース」という感じの、胃にもたれそうな油っぽい演奏の2曲目「Goin’ Down」と思われる。
