中学の頃、このアルバム（確かあの頃の題は「さかしま」）を聴き太宰を読むというスタイルが気に入っていた。デカダン・・・。しかし、所詮あの年頃にありがちな現実逃避の一種なのかなとただ懐古趣味で約３０年ぶりに聴いたのだが、驚いた。なんて進んでたバンドなんだ。なんて完成度が高いアルバムなんだ。今、日本で人気のあるビジュアル系ロックバンドが好きな人に７０年代のグラムロックを聴いて欲しいななんてお節介な気持ちがあるんだけれど、特にこのアルバムは聴くべし。前向きなデカダンスという矛盾を体で感じて欲しい。

７４年発表の２ｎｄ。『さかしま』の邦題で日本でも親しまれている彼らの代表作であると同時に、全英８位にまで登ったヒット作でもある。ちなみに３．も８位にまで登るシングル・ヒットになった。この曲はコミカルな草笛風のシンセのソロが物凄く印象的であり、ことあるごとにテレビなどに使用されていた。そんなわけで彼らの曲とは知らずに聞いたことがある人も多いかもしれない。ギターのフレーズが印象的な６．も彼らの代表曲の一つだろう。オリジナル・メンバーによるコックニー・レベルの作品としては本作が最後となり、この作品発表後のツアーの後、スチュワート・エリオット(Dr) 以外のメンバーは脱退することとなった。以降の作品はスティーヴ・ハーリーがメンバーを集めて作ったソロ的な作風が濃厚になるので、本作以前と以後はちょっと違った作品と見るべきかと思う。(もちろん作品のクオリティーは変わらないが)
ジャケットだけ見るとモーホーな変なイメージも浮ぶが、蓋を開けてみれば１０ｃｃにほぼ通じるプログレッシヴなポップ・グループであり、曲はメロディがハッキリとしたひねりの効いたポップなものばかり。ドラマチックなオーケストラの使用やジャン・ポール・クロッカーのエレクトリック・ヴァイオリンというサウンド面でも聞きどころもあり、文句の付けようのない傑作アルバムだと思う。
