古典落語の名作「崇徳院」「井戸の茶碗」を盛り込んだ喜劇。
聞き取りづらい台詞も字幕で克服。
小気味よいテンポで魅せる、戦前の傑作。

丹下左膳と的矢のお藤のやりとりがとてもおもしろい。

原作者の林不忘は試写を観て「丹下左膳」のキャラクターが全く違うと激怒したそうだ。そうしたこともあってタイトルに「余話」と銘打ったらしい。
確かに原作の左膳はニヒルな剣鬼で凄みのある設定。対して、この映画の左膳は親ばか振りを発揮する人の良い浪人。
でも、林不忘の文体自体がスピード感があって、時にユーモラスな描写も交え、およそ時代劇の文体と言い難い。
だから、この映画の左膳も生まれるべくして生まれたキャラクターなのかもしれない。要するに特異な「丹下左膳」というキャラが天才監督に出会って一人歩き始めたということか。
姉御肌の情婦との関係も西部劇にでてくるクレア・トレバーあたりが演じる酒場の女とヒーローとの関係を思い出してしまう。
良質のエンターテイメントに仕上げた監督の技量にうなるしかない。

この映画が作られたのが昭和１０年、まだ日本ではトーキーが一般化したばかりだった
が、これほど音声を生かしながら、楽しくスキのないストーリーを持った映画が作られ
ていたとは驚きだ。現在の感覚からこの映画を観ても、単に歴史的価値としてではなく、
純粋に面白く観ることができる。

この映画が単なる丹下左膳映画ではなく、なぜ「餘話」なのかについては、これまでさまざ
まな視点で語られてきているので省略するが、かつて多くの丹下左膳映画が作られているの
に、今日最も名声を勝ち得ている映画がこの「餘話」というのが皮肉といえば皮肉。
しかし、この映画で従来のコワイ剣豪のイメージから初めて人間性豊かな左膳になり、観
客は大喜びしたと伝えられている。

元々同時期のアメリカ映画をヒントに作られたと聞くが、やはり監督・山中貞雄のこうし
た‘発想の転換’が画期的な映画を誕生させたと言えるだろう。

この映画は２０年近く前、ＮＨＫで放送されたことがあったのだが、何せトーキー初期の
こと、セリフが途切れがちで非常に聞き取りづらかったことを覚えている。今回のＤＶＤ化
で音声は少し聞きやすくなっているような気がするが、何より字幕がついているのがうれ
しい。

この映画のいきさつについては、筒井康隆著「不良少年の映画史」に詳しく述べられてい
るので、興味ある方はそっちを参照してみてはいかが？
