【プロフィール】Vo. マキが大学在学中に結成したバントを母体に、2002年秋より都内 ライブハウスで本格的に活動を始め、2003年秋には、ファ-スト・ミニアルバム『赤い夜 の足音』をリリース注目を集める。
ヴォーカル、ギター、ベース、ドラムに加え、ピアノ、ツイン・パーカッション、ホーンやヴァイオリンなど、11人編成の大所帯で、迫力と厚みのある演奏を展開する。
ジャズ、ボサノヴァ、ラテンミュージック、歌謡曲など、さまざまな音楽ジャンルを横断して表現されることによって、そのサウンドは広がりを生みだし、ヴォーカル・マキの伸びやかに歌い上げつつも、どこかに儚さと切なさを忍ばせる歌声によって、それは更なる深みと繊細さを備えてゆく。
彼女の歌うストレートな歌詞は人間の不器用さやアンバランスさに対して向けられた優しい眼差しであり、メロディと共に、多くの人々に人恋しさと郷愁感を募らせる。オモチャ箱を開けたようなトキメキとにぎやかさ、壊れかけた人形のような儚さと寂しさ、合入れない感情が独特に絡み合いながら「うた」を表現し、モダーン今夜という世界を作りだしている。
そして、約1年ぶりに発表された待望のセカンドアルバム『青空とマント』は、暖かいまなざしに包み込まれるような懐かしさに触れられるような作品でる。

【内容紹介】前作から約1年を経て届けられた待望の新作。より深みのました永山マキの詩世界とそれを包み込むようなサウンド、11人のビックバンドから放たれるグルーヴは、より進化をとげ、どこにも属す事のない新たな世界を構築している。ダイナミックさと繊細さを同時に兼ね備えた歌世界は、モダーン今夜というバンドを通してより多くの人達と共有できるであろう普遍性を持つ7つの物語を 奏でている。

   ラテン、サンバ、ジャズなどを聴かせる11人大所帯バンド、モダーン今夜のセカンド。この手のバンドはサウンド~グルーヴ指向が強くなりがちだが、このバンドはヴォーカル・永山マキの歌が確固たる中心になっていて、あくまでも歌で聴かせていくところがキモだ。永山はややハスキーな声でイキイキと歌い、エモーショナルな歌詞も含めてヴォーカリストとしての個性を明示。一方の演奏も、そんな彼女とひとつになって躍動していて、サンバにしろジャズにしろアンサンブルが抜群にいい。ソングライティングは昭和歌謡的なメロディーで親しみやすく、楽しさだけを追求するのではなく、スピリットやエンターテインメントもきちんと携えていることをうかがわせる。近年の同種バンドの中では抜きんでた存在といえるだろう。（小山 守）

前作の『赤い夜の足音』もすごく大好きだったけど、この『青空とマント』は、曲の世界がもっと豊かになって、つい何度も何度も聴いてしまう。音のひとつひとつがとっても楽しそうで、切なかったり楽しそうだったり、ボーカルのマキさんの歌声と詩が、わたしの色んな気分を代弁してくれてるかのよう。昨日のレコ発ライブでは、モダーンの迫力に圧倒されっぱなしだった！走れジョディー！！

最近、「コレって音楽って言えるの？」っていう作品が多い中で、間違いなく「音楽」と呼べる作品。

まず、聴いて楽しい。体が動く。
時に荘厳で、時に切ない。

曲によってジャンルのふり幅がものすごく広く、しかし、一本筋が通っており、奇跡的な部分でまとまっている。
音楽に興味の無い人を音楽好きに変えてしまうような一枚。
こういうバンドが増えると、もっと日本の音楽業界は面白くなるのになあ。

生きてるうちに一度は聴くべきです。
