今では、時折ＣＭで見ること以外、ほとんどその名も聞くことはなくなりましたが、石川秀美さんは同じ８２年デビューの歌手の中でもとりわけ光っていたような気がします。確かに、レコードの売れ行きでは小泉今日子に、歌の上手さでは中森明菜には負けたかもしれないけれど、彼女には全身から溢れる輝きがありました。「バイ・バイ・サマー」や「スターダスト・トレイン」なんか本当にいい曲だったし、ロック色が濃くなる後期のシングルに挟まれた、ミディアムテンポの「素敵な勇気」なんかも彼女らしさがありました。

このアルバムでは彼女の主なヒットシングル２０曲が計７６分収録されていて、一枚もののベスト集としては良くできたアルバムだと思います。彼女としては他に、ＤＶＤ付の全シングルＡＢ面がすべて入ったボックス盤も出ているのですが、価格もまた１万円以上するので、コアなファン以外ではこのアルバムからスタートすれば良いでしょう。また、以前のNEW BESTより５曲多くて曲順もバラバラでないのも、彼女の軌跡を見ていくうえで好ましく思います。

彼女は８３年の「Hey！ミスター・ポリスマン」から、８５年「サイレンの少年」までの連続１３曲でオリコン１０位以内チャートインさせているのですが、うち６曲それも４曲連続でオリコンのピッタリ１０位最高という珍しい記録の持ち主でもあります。

友達の間で話題になったのは「ミステリーウーマン」の「Give you one more try and ever again you say」という英語の歌詞でした。英語の意味も分からないのに秀美さんがちょっと怒ったように歌う英語のところをよくマネしましたね。
個人的に好きなのは「あなたとハプニング」ですが「涙のペーパムーン」と「スターダストトレイン」はイントロからして、これぞ王道という感じです。「SHADOW SUMMER」と「LOVE COMES QUICKLY」が入っていないのが残念。

ＢＯＸを買おうか迷っていたところにこのベスト版の発売で迷わずに購入しました。過去にベスト版の発売はありましたが、涙のぺーパームーンやバイバイサマー等がはいっておらず不満でしたがこれは満足の一枚です。ただ欲を言えば春霞恋絵巻が入っていれば完璧だと思いました。
