イギリスとフランスが船で連絡されていた頃の、景色、衣装、文化がみごとに再現されています。海底トンネルで行き来出来てしまう時代では考えられない、パリ全盛期をうまく描写しています。ロダンが前衛すぎて認められていなかった頃から、ロダンがパリ中心になるまでの長い時間を丹念に練り上げていて、その間の人の成長が感動的にまとめられています。

主人公たる姉妹2人と1人の男の３人の抑制された感情とその下で激しく揺れ動く情感の描写が見事な作品です。「恋愛」の形としては古くても正直でな形態で、そこに大変私は惹かれます。
物語の進行がモノローグで（監督の吹込み）人物の性格と行動付けを行なうので観客はそれにしたがってほかのことを考えずに観ていれば良いのです。モノローグ形式が邪魔に感じる方もいると思いますけど。
しかし妹の「告白」の日記の直球的な「自己嫌悪感」の表現とモラルのレベルの高さ、さらにそれゆえに別れることになる男女間のモラルレベルの相違といったら今の時代、新たに恋愛について再認識させられることでしょう。この抑えた抑えた感情が一度爆発しますが、そこが人間たる所以。
音楽も素晴らしいですし、風景もきれいで、かつ女優陣が素晴らしいので一度は観るべき作品かと。

７３歳にして処女作「ジュールとジム」（「突然炎のごとく」の原作）を発表し、生涯２作しか作品を発表しなかった小説家アンリ＝ピエール・ロシェを愛するフランソワ・トリュフォー監督が、「突然炎のごとく」の１０年後に映画化した作品です。英国人姉妹を愛したフランス人青年の三角関係のお話で、ちょうど「突然炎のごとく」の裏返しになっています。ストーリーを際立たせるために、ジャン＝ピエール・レオより大柄の女優を使わない。特別綺麗な女優を使わない。有名女優を使わない、など、トリュフォー監督は二人の映画初出演の英国人女優の起用をこの映画のポイントに考えていたようです。キューバからやってきたネストール・アルメンドロが撮影を担当していますが、音楽担当のジョルジュ・ドリュリューが不動産屋役で１シーンだけ出演しています。
